Description
UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES T. CLOSE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 35,363, dated May 27, 1862.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Beit known that I, CHARLES T. CLosE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new Improvement in the Mannfacture of Lamps, of which the following is a y specification.
Said improvement consists in forming the base and stem of the lamp in one or more parts, so that it can be made to clasp the bottom part of the glass globe or vessel which contains the oil, andsecured to it byk means of screws or rivets, as hereinafter more fully set forth. f l
In the drawings, Figure 1 is aside elevation of my lamp in which the base is represented asbeing made in three parts. Fig. 2 is a sectional top view of the part included between the lines x 00 and y y.
`l is the globe'orvessel for containing the oil. This is made small at a point about one inch from the bottom, from which point it again increases sufliciently to enable the base to be clasped around it so as to hold4 it rmly when the said base is riveted or screwed together. y
2 2 2 are the pieces or parts of the base and stem. They are made at the upper part in such a form as will admit of their being clasped around the bottom part of the globe l, and so that when they are riveted or screwed together they will hold the said globe lfirmly in position.
3 3 3 are the rivets which hold the pieces 2 of the base together at the top. 4 4 4 are the rivets which hold them together at the bottom.
The base may be cast in one piece by joining the three pieces 2 2 2 at the bottom, and then the lamp may be introduced by springing them apart at the top. They may be also made similar to those in the drawings, except in the number of pieces, which may be two,
four, five, or more. I prefer, however, to make them as described. By this construction lamps may be made more effective and at a less cost than in the old way.
I claim- The combination of the globe or vessel l, and base 2 2 2, constructed and arranged substantially as set forth.
