ATTORNEYS Unirnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN T. BARTON, OF BLUE RAPIDS, KANSAS.
COMBINED DOMESTIC BOILER AND HEATING-DRUM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 356,345, dated January 18, 1887.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. BARTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Blue Rapids, in the county of Marshall and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Domestic Boilers and Heating-Drums; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,.and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and is a vertical section. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken across the reservoir.
This invention has relation to stove-pipe drums for heating purposes, and in connection therewith an annular reservoir for heating water, making coffee, &c., all as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the heater-drum, which is made in the shape of an inverted truncator having its bottom B open to fit the collar of the stove.
This bottom wall is crimped, as shown at 0, so that the air will be allowed to enter in some degree, and thereby prevent rusting and burning. The top or base of the cone-drum is annular, as indicated at D, and is provided with a pipe, E, which is secured thereto, and 6X- tends upward from the central opening. The top of this pipe is usually crimped, and to this pipe is fitted the lower section of the ordinary stove-pipe, which carries away the products of combustion, all of which pass through the cone-drum. Before fitting the section of stovepipe to the tube E of the drum the annular reservoirG is placed thereon, its central opening or tubular center H fitting upon the tube E and its base resting upon the annular top of the drum.
The reservoir G is cylindrical and annular, having the central tubular passage, H, formed by its inner wall. It has an annular bottom later will raise the cone-damper and an annular top, the latter being provided with the filling-spouts K, which have hinged lids L. The discharge-faucetsare represented at m. It is designed, usually, to divide the reservoir in two compartments, N and P, one
being for water and the other for coffee or other beverage. The reservoir can be readily turned on the tube E.
IVithin the cone-drum is the suspended adjustable cone-damper It, the apex of which is downward. The form of this damper is such that the heated products of combustion are defiected by it outward and upward all around it, so that they take effect in the most direct manner upon the annular top of the drum, and heat is not wasted.
The cone-damper is provided with a center link, S, which extends upward from a transverse strap or bar, T, and receives the spiral regulator V, which is secured to the transverse shaft Z, which has its bearings in the wall of the drum. This spiral regulator may be formed of wire coiled in the vertical plane, its coils gradually becomingless and less toward the shaft to which it is attached. By turning the shaft Z in one direction the spiral reguupward, shutting off the draft according to the degree of approximation of said damper to the top of the drum. IVhen the shaft is turned in the opposite direction, the gradually-increasing coils of the regulator allow the damper to fall, opening the drafts more and more.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
The combination, with the inverted-coneshaped stove-pipe drum,'of the adjustable in verted-cone damper, the spiral regulator, and the transverse shaft supporting the same and having its bearings in the wall of the drum,
substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
