FLAT-IRON HEATER.
SPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 357,406, da.ted February 8, 1887.
Applieation filed August T, 1856.
Be iE known EhaE I, EUGENE A. NELMS, a citizen 0f Ehe United Staates 0f America, residing a1: Atlanta, in Ehe counEy 0f Fulton and SEaEe of Georgia, have invented cerEain new and useful Improvements in Sad-Iron Heaters;
and I do hereby deelare Ehe following Eo be a fnll, elear, and exaeE deseripEion 0f Ehe in vent ion, snch as Will enable 0Ehers skilled in Ehe arE Eo Which iE appertains Eo make ancl use Ehe san1e, reference heing had E0 Ehe aeeompanyingdrawlngs and t0 letters orfigures 0f reference marked Ehereon, which f0rm a perlt 0f Ehis specification.
My invention relates Eo eertain uewaud usefulimprovemehts in flaEiron heaters, Ehe 0bjeeE of seid invention being Eo provide a eheap and effective heater 01 st0ve which is adapted t0 burn eit-her charcoal 01 hard eoal as fuel, seid heater being provided ab its sides WiEh d001s and means f0r supporEing the flata'rons, so Eh2 mE Ehe b0.dy porEion 0f Ehe iron Will be exposed t0 Ehe fuel, whi1e Ehe handle will projeeE Ehrough Ehe side Walls 0f the heater; and Eo Ehis end my invenEion consists in Ehe Constrnction and eornbinaEion of Ehe parts, as will be hereinafter fully seE f0rlh, and specifically pointed ouE in Ehe elaims.
In Ehe accompanying drawings, which illus- EraEe my invention, Figure l is a perspective view 0f a sad-iron heaEer eonsfiruetecl in aeeordance wiEh myinVention, and Fig. 2 is a vertical secEional view.
A refers Eo Ehe b0dy porEion 0f Ehe flaE-ir0n heater, which is preferably rcetangular in crossseeEion, Ehough f0r Ehe pnrpose 0f accommodaEing more Ehen four flaE-irons seid body porEion may be eiEher live er six sided or ocEagonal.
The side plates, A, of- Ehe heater. are preferably made up of sheeE-iron, 2Llld are con neeted. E0 each 0Eher at Eheir edges and aE Eheir E0p and ho Etom porEions by plaEes a ahd b, and Eo Ehe lower corners are atEached suitable supporting-legs. The t0p platze, a, may be provided With suitable perforations and wiEh a damper, B, wiEh corresponcling perforabions, so EhaE when Ehe damper is placed so EhaE Ehe perforaEionswill register Ehe products of eomlousEion Will pass through seid perforations Over Ehe damper B may be plaeed a pipe for conveying Ehe products of eombustion Sexi:1l N0. 2l0,345. (N0 model.)
Eo achimney. If desirable, Ehe npper pla Ee a, may be provicled wiEh a h00d instead of-a pipe. Euch of Ehe side plates, A, is provided wiEh doors C, which eure hinged Eo 0ne side 0f Ehe 0penings D in Ehe side plates, A. These hinged do0rs 0 are ea0h provi cled near Eheir central portions with vertical slots c, which 2me 0f a snfficient widEh t0 receive Ehe handles of Ehe flaE-irons. The portion 0f Ehe doors nearesb Ehe hinges is provided wiEh re cesses c, within which Ehe handles 0f Ehe flaE- irons are plaeed, so that Ehe weighE 0f seid 'iron will resE upon Ehe porbion of Ehe dogr nearesb Ehe supporting-hinges. Beneath Ehe slots c the d001s are provided With transverse strips e, which are rivetecl EhereEo 01' easE wiEh Ehe (1001, a portion of said strips projeebing aE righE angles Eo Ehe (leer, and fr0xn Ehenee upwvardly, and upon Ehe horizontal porEion 0f Ehese sErips e Ehe eml 01 Ehe sad ir0n Will bear. The notches c in Ehe (1001, besicles Ehrowing Ehe weighE 0f Ehe flaE-iron np0n Ehe side 0f Ehe door nearesb Ehe hinges, will also prevenE Ehe flaE-iron tilting when Ehe-door is opened.
VVhen hard coal is used as a. fuel up0n Ehe" grate E, I attaeh Eo Ehe (1001 a benE plate, F, which forms, with Ehe d001, an open-ended box 0f suffieient size E0 receive Ehe fl:EE-iron so as Eo proteeb Ehe samefrorn Ehe action 0f Ehe fuel. This box also serves Eo sErengthen Ehe door and prevenb Ehe parts separazing laterully 3.17 Eheir upper ends.
If desired, when Ehe Eransverse sErip e is employed, Ehe d001' (J is provided aE its upper end wiEh a lighE bar, e, which is attached E0 Ehe sides 0f Ehe door and projects sufficientzly inwardly Eo allow Ehe iron Eo pass Ehroug'h Ehe (Ehe sad-iron heater herei1ibefore deserihe'd is eomparatively cheap in consEruction and is effeeEive 1n operaEion.
'lhe doors hereinbefore described may be readily app1ied t0 base-burning stoves 01' ordinary consbrnction, and I do notwish to 1imit myself to tl1e speeial consbruction andarrangementof be parts herein shown and deseribed, but reserve the righb to modify 0r change my invention within the scope Of my claims.
I claim 1. The con1bination, with the body 0f a heater constructed substantially as shown, 0f the swingiug doors O, provided with centml slots, und lateral notches opening fron1 said slots ab the base and near the upper ends uhereof, within whieh notehes will rast the handles of the fiat irons, substantially as shown, and for the purpose seb forth.
2. 'Ihe eombination, With the body 0f a. heater, of be hinged door O, provided with a centml slot, c, and'a bearing plate 01 rast, e, attached b0 the (1001 beneath the s10t, substantially as shown, and for the purpose sei; forth.
3. In a saddron heater, the body thereof constructed substantially as described, in combineition With the hinged doors O, provided eentrally wibh a vertical slot, c, and a pockeb with an open upper end attaehed to t-he inner side of the door for the reception of the body portion of theflat-ironsubstantially as shown, and f0r bhe purpose set forbh.
4. In combination wibh the body 0f a sadiron heater, the hinged doors O, provided cantra1ly wibh a verbical s1ot having notches c, opening laterally from said s1ob, transverse pl'abes e, attached to the bottom porbion of bhe door and adapted 110 Support the iron, and a. transverse bar 01 loop, e attached to the upper portion Of the door, substantially as shown, and for the pnrpose sei: forbh.
5. In combination wibh the body of aheater, the hinged (1001 provided with a vertieal s]ob having notches c c, locatsed 130 one side of said slot, and a transverse plate, e, Wit-h an upburned edge abtaehed tO the d oor near its bobtom porbion, so as t0 Support the sad-iron, substantially as shown, and for t-he purpose sei; forth.
In testimony whereof I affix m y si gnature in presence 0f two witnesses.
