Beit known that '1, J LESTER OsGooD, of the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bit-Braces, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to an improvement 1n the construction of the bit-stock in which the bit is secured, and which is composed of two clamping-jaws secured to a central socket portion and a screw-threaded sleeve, which surrounds the jaws and socket portion, whereby thejaws are clamped tightly against the bit.
The object of my invention is to improve the construction of this class of bit-stocks and to render the same simple-in construction and i durable and convenient in use.
The invention'consists of the improvements which will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a sectional elevation of a bit-stock provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a section at right angles to Fig. 1, showing the socket portion in elevation. Fig. 3 is a crosssection in line x m, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation in line yy, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 isaperspective view of the upper end of the socket portion with the clamping-jaws and screw-sleeve removed. Fig. G is a perspective view of the clamping-jaws. Fig. 7 is a sectional elevation of the socket portion, the section being taken through the recess between the posts.

A represents the end of the brace, which is of any ordinary or suitable construction, andv which carries the stock in which the bit is secured.
B represents the shank or socket piece formed at the end of the brace, and c thesocket, of rectangular crosssection, which is formed in the piece B and receives the -shank of the bit. The shank B is provided with an external screw-thread.

d is provided on its inner side with a lug or projection, e, which engages in a groove or recess, f, formed in the adjacent side of the jaw E.
f represents a groove or recess formed in the opposite side vof the jaws E, and ea lip or projection. formed on the end of each post d adjacent to the recess f. Each post d is provided with a lug, e, on one side ot' the socket c, anda lip, e', on the opposite side of the socket, so that the two opposite sides of both posts d d, on the same side ofthe socket, between which` one of the jaws Eis arranged, contain a lug, e, and a lip, e'. The grooves f extend from the inner faces or edges of the jaws outwardly, and are closed at their outer ends, and the recesses f extend from the outer edges of the jaws inwardly, and are closed at their inner ends, as shown in Fig. 6. The two recesses j' are arranged on diagonally-opposite sides of the jaws E, and the two lugs e arelikewise arranged diagonally. The recesses f and the lugs e are arranged similarly, but on opposite sides of the jaws and posts.
Upon inserting the jaws E into the slot d', the lugs e enter the recesses f, and the lips e will stand opposite the recesses f in the adjacent sides of thejaws. Vhen the jaws have been inserted in the slot d', the lips e are bent over, so as to enter the recesses f', as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, whereby the jaws are held in the slot d on opposite sides of the socket c.
g g are lugs or projections formed on the inner sides of the posts d on opposite sides of the socket c, between the lower ends of the jaws and projecting into the slot d', so as to prevent the inner or lower ends of the jaws from coming in contact with each other.
The jaws E are provided on their opposite sides or faces with V-shaped recesses, which receive the shank of the bit.
H represents the screw'sleeve, which surrounds the socket portion B and engages with a screw-thread, z', formed thereon, so that by screwing the sleeve H down the outer contracted portion of the sleeve will close the jaws E E upon the bit and securely fasten the latter in the socket. l
The lugs e and grooves j' limit the inward movement of the jaws, and the lugs e and grooves f limit the outward movement of the jaws. Both sets of lugs and grooves serve to attach thejaws permanently to the socket B, and prevent the jaws from beeoniingdetaehed when the screw-sleeve H is removed.

'In inserting the square shank ofthe bitinto the socket, the inner narrow end of the shank enters the socket c and is held and properly centered thereby, While the outer portion of the shank is grasped by the jaws E, and the bit thereby firmly secured to the stock.

2. The combination, with the socket portion B, carrying posts (l, which areseparated by a transverse slot, d, and provided with lugs c and e', of jaws E, provided in their sides with grooves f, open at their inner ends and closed at their outer ends, in which the lugs e ein gage, and also with grooves f', open at their outer ends and closed at their inner ends, in which the lugs e engage, substantially as set forth.
