Be it known that I, JOHN C. COLLINS, of Chillicothe, in the county of Ross and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Filling Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. 1
The object oi' my invention is to provide a new and improved apparatus for filling hot saltwater or other liquids into cans contain. ing corn or other vegetables;
The invention consists of various parts and details and combinations of the saine, as' will be fully described hereinafteaand then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawingaforrning a. part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

On a suitably-constructed frame, A, 1s su pported the water-reservoir B, provided with the inlet-pipe C and with a series of filling pipes or tubes, D, extending downward from the bottom of the reservoir and each being provided in its lower funnel-shaped end with a vaive-seat, D', on which operates the valve E, secured to a rod, Ff, extending in the said tnbeD and having its bearing in the lower end'of the tube D, as shown in Fig. l1, and in the perforated cap D2, screwed in the upper end of the said tube D. ` upper end oi' the rod F.' is connected .with a so' that an oscillation imparted to one of the shafts is imparted to all the shafts, thus operi ating the valves E simultaneously.

provided ou its outer end with a lever, F, connected by a link, F', with a lever, F, fulcrumed on the frame A and pivot-ally connected with the vertical rod F3, provided with two adjustable collars, F* and F5, on which operates the arm F, sliding on the rod F, between the. collars F4 and F5, and the said arm F6 extends to and is secured to the frame G, adapted to slide vertically in suitable guides, A', ou the main frame A.
The frame G is provided with a box, G, which forms a support for the tray H, containing the cans H',f:illed with corn or other vegetables, and to be supplied with a liquid, pref erably hot salt-water. The frame G is also provided with a horizontal plate, G', held by side arms, G2, at a suitable distance above the said frame G, and said plate consists of two thin metal strips with a sheet, G5, oi'rubber placed between them, as shown in Figs. 2 and 6. The plate G is provided with a number of apertures arranged in such a manner that y through each extends a corresponding fillingtube, D. The rubber sheet fits snugly around the tubes D, which in their vertical movement are kept clean by the said rubber.
The box G* is provided with adischargepipe, G3, and the frame G is connected by the rod I, having a bearing in the frame A, with the pitman J, pivotally connected with the crank-disk K, secured ou the shaft L, mounted in the frame A and provided with the driving wheel N, which has a segmental recess,
N', and is adapted to be thrown into frictional contact with the maindrivingwheel O, secured to the shaft O', also mounted in the frame A, and provided with the driving-pulleys O2.

hung'loosely on the s liaft L and,connect ed by with the inlet-pipe U and an outlet-pipe, U2.
Tile operation is as follows: A continuous rotary motion is given to the main drivingwheel O by the rotating pulleys 0"',secured to the shaft O', carrying the said wheel O. The cans containing the corn or other vegetable are held on the tray H, and the latter is placed in V.the box G* so that cach lling-tube D stands centrally above its respective can. The tray H on being placed on the frame G, presses the tripping-lever V outward, thus causing an upward movement of the arin T, which movement .is transmitted by the link* S tothe arm R, which presses against. the catch Q, and thereby rotates the wheel N slightly, so that the rim ofthe wheel N is thrown into frictional contact with the rim of the wheel O, which imparts its rotary motion to the said wheel N, thus turning the shaft L and the crank-wheel R, whereby the frame G, with the tray H,is raised by the action of the pitman J on the connecting-rod I. fEhe upward move ment ofthe frame G causes the filling-tubes D to enter the cans, and when the dskK has nearly completed a half-revolution, then the arm FG, connected with the frame G, rstrikes the collar'F* and causes an upward movement of the rod D, whereby the valves E in the tilling-tubes D are Yunseated by the connection of the valve-rods E with the. said rod F, as above described. The water or'other liquid contained in the reservoir B. now iows into the cans H through the filling-tubes D until the crank-disk K has nearly completed its full revolution, when the arm FG strikes the collar F5 on the rod F3, and thereby again seats the valves E int-he tilling-tubes D. It will be seen that when the crank-disk K is making its second half-revolution the'frame G again descends and the tubes D are withdrawn from the cans; but the tubes leave a central recess in each of the said cans, which is filled by the water, and which recess varies according to the -grade of the corn contained in the cans', as shown in Figs. 8, 9, and l0. Thus, for instance, when the can is filled with young and tender corn, as shown inFig. 8, and the tube D recedes after being near the bottom of the said can, then the recess left in the said can is very small, as shown, on account of the elasticity of the corn, which expands again when the ,tube-D vreeedes, and thus a small amount of Water is introduced in the can, as the corn prevents, to a certain extent, a free iiow of the liquid from the tube D. When the can is filled with medium young corn, as shown in Fig. 9, then the recess left by the filling-tube D is somewhat larger, and more liquid is introduced, and when the can is filled with older and harder corn, then the recess formed by the filling-tube D extends from the `bottom of the can to the upper end of the same,
as shown in Fig. l0, and a considerable amount of liquid is introduced in the said can, When the wheel N has completed its revolution, the segmental recess N is above the wheel O, and the frictional contact between thc wheels N and O is broken, so that the lwheel N comes to a standstill and at the same time the arm Ris in the position in relation to the catch Q shown in Fig. 3. Thetray His removed and another one is placed on the frame G and the abovedescribed opera-tion is repeated.
Thel reservoir B is supplied with liquid by the 'pipe C, and the drip-watercollcc'ted in the box G4 is discharged into the pipe G.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a filling apparatus, the combination of the sliding frame having a projecting arm, a second arm having a tripping-lever and connecting by a rod with an additional arm e'ngaging with a catch upon a wheel connect-ing by a disk, pitman, and rod with the said frame, and thereservoir carrying filling-tubes Vlever and connecting by a rod with a second arm engaging a catch upon a wheel connecting by a disk, pitmau, and rod with the saidframe, in combination with a stationary reservoir located abovethe said tray, filling-tubes extending downward from the bottom of the said reservoir, a valve in each of the said tubes, and means, as described, for opening and closing the said valves automatically, as set forth".

. with a frame adapted to slide vertically, of a tray placed on the,said frame, and means, the same consisting of the tripping-lever connecting by an arm and a link with a second arm engaging with a catch secured to a wheel, for imparting a sliding motion to the said frame,I the said tripping-lever being actuated by the said tray, substantially as set forth.

In a filling apparatus, the main frame A, the frame G, provided with the box G4 and adapted to slide on the said frame A, the rod I, secured to the said frame G and having its bearing on the said frame A, the pitman J, pivotally connected with the said rod I, the crank-disk K,connected with the said pitman J, the shaft L, supporting the said crank-disk K, and the pulleyA N, having a segmental notch, N and secured on the said shaft L, in combination withthe tray H, adapted to be placed on the said frame G, the trippingdevice P, actuated by the said tray H and operating the said'pulley N, and the rotating driving-wheel O, imparting motion to the said wheel N, substantially as shown and described.
6. In a filling apparatus, the rotating drivingwl1eel0, the wheel N, having theseglnental notch N', the sh aft L, supporting the said wheel N, and the catch Q, secured to the face of the said wheel N, in combination with the arm R, operating on the said catch Q, thelink S, pivotally connected with the said arm R, thearm T, secured to the rocking shaft T' and connected with the said link S, and the downwardly-extending arm V, secured to the said rocking shaft Tand operated by the tray, substantiall y as shown and described.

In a lilling apparatus, the main frame A, the reservoir B, secured on the said frame A, the tubes D, extending from the bottom of the said reservoir B, the valves E, held in the said tubes D, the rods E', supporting thesaid valves E, the crank-'arms E2, pivotally connected with the said rods E', shafts E3, supporting the said crank-arms E2, the-.arms E, attached on the said shafts E3, and the connecting-bar E5, pivotally attached to the said arms E, in combination with theframe G, adapted to slide on the said main frame A, the arm F, ,connectedV with the said frame G, the rod F3, provided with the collars F* and F5, on which the said arm FG operates, the lever F, pivoted on the said frame Aand con F3, the link F', pivotally connected with' the said lever,and thelever F, pivotally'conneeted with the said link F and secured on one of` the shafts E, substantially as shown and described..
