INVENTOR "Q BY ATTORNEYS WITNESSES ii, PETERS. Photoimlngnphur, Wllhingtoq. n. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PETER'J. ,PEFLEY, OF BOISE CITY, IDAHO TERRITORY.
GIRTH=BUCKLE FOR SADDLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 362,655, dated May 10, 1887.
Application filed September 21, 1886. Serial No. 214,160. (No model.)
1'0 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PETER J. PEFLEY, of
Boise Oity,in the county of Ada and Territory The invention also consists of various partsand details, and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification ,in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a perspective view of one of the buckles. Fig. 2 is a similar View of the other buckle, and Fig. 3 is a perspectivp view showing the bucklcs united.
Each of the two buckles A and B is provided with the usual cross bar, 0, and the tongue D pivoted in the center of the said bar 0.
The buckle A is provided on one side with the ears or lugs E and F, of which the lug E carries the stationary button G, consisting of the shaft G and the head G and the lugF is provided with the projection H, consisting of the shank H and the flat winged head H On one side of the buckle B extend two lugs or ears, I and J, which correspond in size and shape to the ears or lugs E and F on the buckle A. The ear or lug I has a slot, K, which is enlarged at its inner end, K,to such an extent as to permit the head G of the button G to pass through the same, while the rest of the slot K corresponds in width to the diameter of the shank G.
The ear or lug J is provided with a diagonal slot, L, which is enlarged in its center to admit the shank H of the projection H, and the length of the said slot L corresponds to the width of the winged head H The two bucklesA and B are united by' passing the projection H through the slot L, and then turning the buckles A and B until the head G of the button G is above the aperture K, and can be passed through the latter, after which the shank G is permitted to slide to the outer end of the said slot K, so that the head G of the button G, resting on the lug 1, holds the two lugs E and I together, while the proj ection H, standing at an angle to the diagonal slot L,holds the two lugs or cars F and J together, thus firmly uniting the two buckles A and B.
The two girths generally used in Spanish or Mexican saddles are attached independently to the said buckles A and B, as shown in Fig. 8.
Either of the buckles A and B can be used separately for a single girth in the usual manner, if desired.
Having thus fully described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. As an improved article of manufacture, the double buckle consisting of two'independw ent buckles provided with means, substantially as described, for detachably securing them together,'as set forth.
2. The buckle A, provided with the ears E and F, carrying the button G and the projection H, respectively, in combination with the buckle B, provided with the slotted ears I and J, substantially as shown and described.
3. The buckle A, provided with the ear E, carrying the button G, and with the ear F,carrying the projection H, in combination with the buckle B, provided with the ear I,having the slot K, having the enlarged end K, and with the ear J, having the diagonal slot L, substantially as shown and described.
4. The buckle A, provided with the ear E, carrying the button G, consisting of the shank G and the head G and with the ear F,carrying the projection H, consisting of the shank H and the winged head H in combination with the buckle B, provided with the ear I, having the slot K, enlarged at its inner end,
and with the ear J, having the diagonal slot L,
enlarged in its center, substantially as shown and described.
