Forlenza Assistant Examiner-John Mannix An0rneyAlexander B. Blair ABSTRACT: An elongated sheet metal or similar body is provided at the top centrally thereof with a supporting hook and at the side thereof with a carrying handle, and a depending elongated flange is provided with horizontally spaced openings to receive the hooks of coat hangers for the manual carrying of a plurality of articles ofclothing.
L W Q W M CLOTHESCADDY BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION In traveling in an automobile, it is a common practice to carry by hand a group of coat hangers having clothes suspended thereon which are hung inside the vehicle, sometimes on a cross bar mounted in the back of the vehicle. It is I very difiicult and often painful to the hands to carry a number of articles of clothing, holding in one hand all of the hooks of a number of coat hangers.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring to the drawing, the numeral 10 designates the body of the device which may be made of any suitable material, preferably stamped sheet metal. The body of the device is elongated, as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 and comprises a vertical side wall 12, a top horizontal wall 14 and a transversely shortened bottom wall 16 at the inner edge of which the sheet metal is bent downwardly to form a depending elongated flange 18. This flange has horizontally spaced, preferably punctured opening 20, as clearly shown in FIGS. 1, these openings being for the reception of the hooks of clothes hangers having articles of clothing suspended therefrom.
For supporting the device and the clothing in a vehicle body or any other place, the body 10 is provided with a supporting book 22 having a lower vertical shank 24 which may extend through a vertical sleeve 26 welded as at 28 or otherwise secured to the top member 14. The shank 24 is peened over or upset to form a flange 30 resting on the upper end of the sleeve 26, and the lower end of the shank is peened or riveted over as at 32 (FIG. 4). Thus the hook is adapted to swivel in the sleeve 26 and is prevented from moving vertically.
The device is provided with a carrying handle 34. This handle is preferably secured to the vertical wall 12 and has reduced ends 36 extending therethrough, preferably with nuts 38 threaded on the ends 36.
OPERATION When a group of coat hangers with clothes supported thereon are to be taken to a vehicle or other place, the hooks of coat hangers are inserted through the openings 20 to be supported by the device. The device with the suspended clothing then may be carried by the handle 34 to any point desired, for example, to the interior of a motor vehicle. The hook 22 then may be engaged over a clothes bar in the vehicle, or may be hung on the small hanger hook provided in most motor vehicles by the manufacturer.
Instead of carrying a number of regular coat hangers by engaging the hooks thereof with one hand, which can be very awkward and often painful to the hands, the user may carry the entire load through the medium of the handle 34. The device thus clearly facilitates the handling of a substantial number of articles of clothing and is particularly handy in use for tourists in carrying clothing to an automobile and supporting the clothing thereon. The hook 22 may be turned on the axis of the shank 24 to facilitate the hanging of the device from any desired hook or bar.
From the foregoing it will now be seen that there is herein provided an improved clothes caddy which accomplishes all of the objects of this invention and others, including many advantages of great practical utility and commercial importance.
As various embodiments may be made of this inventive concept, and as many modifications may be made in the embodiment hereinbefore shown and described it is to be understood that all matter herein is to be interpreted merely as illustrative,
and not in a limiting sense.
I claim:
1. A clothing caddy comprising an elongate bed body having a lower flange provided with horizontally spaced openings to be engaged by the hooks of coat hangers suspended therebelow, said body formed of sheet material and including an upper laterally extending horizontally elongated wall, a vertical horizontally elongated side wall connected to said upper wall, a carrying handle secured to said side wall, an inwardly extending lower wall beneath said upper wall turned downwardly beneath the center of said upper wall to fonn said lower flange in which said spaced openings are formed, and a supporting hook connected to said upper wall at the top of said body to engage any suitable element for supporting the device and clothes wherever desired.
2. A device according to claim 1 wherein said top wall is provided with a sleeve, said hook having a lower vertical shank projecting through said sleeve to rotate therein and being fixed against vertical movement with respect thereto.

Claims (2)

1. A clothing caddy comprising an elongate bed body having a lower flange provided with horizontally spaced openings to be engaged by the hooks of coat hangers suspended therebelow, said body formed of sheet material and including an upper laterally extending horizontally elongated wall, a vertical horizontally elongated side wall connected to said upper wall, a carrying handle secured to said side wall, an inwardly extending lower wall beneath said upper wall turned downwardly beneath the center of said upper wall to form said lower flange in which said spaced openings are formed, and a supporting hook connected to said upper wall at the top of said body to engage any suitable element for supporting the device and clothes wherever desired.
2. A device according to claim 1 wherein said top wall is provided with a sleeve, said hook having a lower vertical shank projecting through said sleeve to rotate therein and being fixed against vertical movement with respect thereto.
