UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK KOPP, OF ROCHESTER, NE\V YORK.
ORNAMENTING GARMENTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 366,405, dated July 12, 1887.
Application filed February 28, 1887. Serial No. 229.1l4. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK Korr, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ornamenting Garments and other Articles. of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in ornamenting garments and other articles by which the plaiting of the same, which renders the garments unnecessarily heavy, is dispensed with, and a very neat and striking appearance imparted to the same without any increase in cost, as compared to the plaited jacket or other garments heretofore in use.
The invention consists of a childs jacket or other garment in which certain designs are cut out of the main layer of fabric and backed by a layer of textile fabric, to which the edges of the cut-out portion of the design are stitched.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a jacket made according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail horizontal section of a portion of the jacket, taken on line :0 m, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a boys jacket which is provided at the front part of the body and collar, at the pocket-flaps and sleeves, and at the lower part of the back and at other suitable points with ornamental designs a, that are cut out from the body of the fabric 1), by means of a stencil, which is placed on the fabric before the garment is made up, and by which the design is marked thereon and cut out by scissors or otherwise. The
fabric 1) is then backed with a layer, B, of silk, wool, or any other suitable textile fabric of the same or different color as the main fabric, and the edges of the design stitched by the sewingmachine to the backing, as shown clearly in the drawings. The backing B is below the surface of the outer or main layer of fabric, and protected by the same against wear. It imparts a Very ornamental character to boys and girls jackets or other garments and is not more expensive than the plaiting of the garment, which is thereby entirely dispensed with, U
whereby, also, a lighter garment is obtained, which is of special advantage in the summer season.
The method of ornamenting is also applicable to table-covers, sofa-cushions, and other articles, as the backing imparts an embroidery like character to said articles.
Having thus described my invention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A garment or other article the body or fabric of which is provided with ornamental designs cut in said fabric and lined with a backing to which the edges of the design are stitched, substantially as set forth.
2. The method herein described of ornament-ing garments and other articles, which consists in marking a suitable design on the fabric composing said article, cutting out the design, backing the same with a layer of textile fabric, and stitching the edges of the cutout design to the backing, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in preseuce of two subscribing witnesses.
FREDERICK KOPP.
