Description

(Model.)
B. ZIESOHE.
COVER FOR TOBACCO BOXES.
,26'7. Patented Aug. 16, 1887.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD ZIESCHE, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
COVER FOR TOBACCO-BOXES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 368,267, dated August 16, 1887.
Application tiled December 20, 1886. Serial No. 222,107.
To (1% whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD ZIEsoHE, a resident of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented a new and useful Cover for Tobacco-Boxes; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawingS.
My invention relates to a device for protecting tobacco in boxes when opened and exposed for sale from the deteriorating effects of dust and weather.
The following description fully explains the nature of my said invention and the manner in which I proceed to construct, apply, and use the same, the accompanying drawings being referred to by figures and letters.
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the device applied. Fig. 2 represents an end elevation otthe device, showing the lid open. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line was of Fig. 1.
The object of my invention is to protect manufactured tobacco in boxes when opened and exposed for sale.
Vhen my device is applied to a box,the tobacco is fully exposed to view, while it is protected not only from dust, but from the desiccating effects of a dry wind and the equally injurious effects of a humid atmosphere.
Referring to Fig. 1, a standard box, a, for tobacco is provided with a cover consisting of a frame, I), made of tin or any suitable metal, to which a lid, 0, is attached by hinges d. The metal frame fits over the top of a tobacco-box from which an end has been removed, and a flange, 9, attached all round the frame inside above the center, rests upon the end of the tobaeco-box. The lid, made of a frame of wood or metal, is hinged to the metal frame 1), into which it closes down, the sides of the said frame and one end opposite the hinges extend- (ModeLl iug above the flange, upon the top of which the lid rests. In the frame of the lid a pane ofglass, f, is glazed, and on the front end of the lid there is attached a button, 0, for the purpose of raising the lid.
My cover is adapted for the standard sizes V of tobaccoboxes, but may be made to suit any special size. It may be applied also to boxes containing fruit, grocery articles,or dry goods.
As tobacco especially is injured by exposure to dust or moisture or a dry wind or atmosphere, I claim that my simple device has the advantage of securing to it the required protection.
I am aware that the ends of tobacco-boxes have been provided with a supplemental cover or lid for the purpose of displaying and protecting the contents thereof, which is generally made flush with the interior and exterior surfaces of the box, and provided with clips or dowels to hold the cover firmly to the box;-
but I am not aware that any tobacco-box has been provided with a cover for this purpose consisting of a metal frame which is slipped over the end of the box, and provided also with an interior flange which rests against the end of the box, thus holding the cover seeurely in its proper position without the use of dowels, clips, nails, or screws.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of a tobacco-box with the removable metal frame I), provided on its inner sides with the flange 9, adapted to bear against the end of the box, and with the lid 0 hinged thereto, said lid provided with a pane of glass, f, and button 6, substantially as described.
