Description

(No Model.) D..H.DUGAR.
GONNBGTING ROD. v No. 372,848. Patented Nov. 8, 1887.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DELANO H. DUGAR, OF CEDABTOWN, GEORGIA.
CQNNECTING-ROD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 372,843, dated November 8, 1887.
Application filed April 16, 1887. Serial No. 235,010. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DELANO H. DUGAR, a
. citizen of the United States, residing at Cedartown, in the county of Polk and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Connecting-Rods for Steam- Engines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.y
`This invention relates to pitmen or connecting-rods, and has for its object to devise a construction for taking up wear without varying the distance between the centers of the bearings.
The improvement consists in having a twopart box fitted in the end or ends of the pitman, the sides ofthe box tapering, and a cap provided with wedge shaped projections, which embrace and are adapted to bear against the inclined sides of the halves of the box, so that an inward movement of the cap brings the halves close together, advancing them toward each other equally, thus preserving the center of the bearing.
The improvement further consists in the novel features of construction, hereinafter more fully set forth, claimed, and shown in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a top plan view. of a pitman or connecting-rod embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a section on the line :vm of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a perspective view of the cap, and Fig. 4 a perspective view of one of the halves of the box.
The connecting-rod or pitman may be of any desired pattern, and has its end provided with the recess e, which receives the box composed of the halves C C. rlhe sides o taper, forming wedge-shaped spaces on each side of the box, between it and the end walls of the recess c, for receiving the wedge-shaped projections b of the cap B, bolted to the side of the connecting-rod by the bolts E, passing through the rod on each side of the recess and screwed into the cap. The jam-nuts F lock the cap in any adj usted position. The cap has flanges b at each end, which fit in corresponding rabbets H in the rod and guide the cap in its movements. The adjacent ends of the halves of the boxes are normally separated, so they may be brought together when taking up wear, and the sides are anged, and the flanges overlap the sides of the connectingrod and thecap, as shown.
ln practice, when it becomes necessary to take up wear, the bolts E are screwed into the cap, thus drawing the cap closer to the sides of the rod and forcing the wedge-shaped projections b between the halves of the box and the walls of the recess, and this operation advances the halves toward each other in opposite directions, so that the center of the bearing remains intact. When the cap is adjusted, the jam-nuts are turned up against it and fix its position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The connecting-rod having a recessed end, in combination with a two-part box having tapering sides fitted in the recess, and the cap' provided with wedge-shaped .projections which enter vthe recess and embrace the box, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, with the connectingrod having a recessed end and rabbets on each side of the recess, of the box made in halves and having tapering sides, and the cap provided with wedge-shaped projections and having flanges which are adapted to fit the rabbets, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with the connectingrod having a recessed end, the box composed of two halves and having tapering sides, and the cap' provided with Wedge-shaped projections, of the bolts passed through the rod on each side of the recess and screwed into the cap, and the jam-nuts mounted on the ends of the bolts, substantiallyas set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DELANO H. DUGAR.
