Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
B ENJAMIN S. BENSON, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN SOUNDS FOR THE UTERUS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 37,486, dated January 27, 1863.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, BENJAMIN S. BENsoN, of the city of Baltimore, in the State of Mary land, have invented an Improved Uterine Sound and Porte-Caustic; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and correct vdescription of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view ofthe instrument with the slide withdrawn, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section of the same.
The nature of my invention consists in the combination in one instrument of a uterine sound and portecaustic, the instrument being applicable to the ordinary operation of sounding the uterus as well as to the introduction of dry remedies in the form of powder into that organ, the quantity to be so introduced being controlled by a graduated scale, all as hereinafter more fully described.
. In the accompanying drawings, in which the same part is indicated by the same letter of reference in both figures, A marks the body of the instrument, which consists of a metallic tube (gold or silver preferred) of the proper size for the intended use, and curved at the end, as represented. It has a bulb, B, on it to indicate the distance it has passed into the womb, and is slightly enlarged at the extremity C. The instrument is held by the handle D. In the bore of the tube plays freely, but snugly, the curved rod or piston E, which has a milled head or button on its outer end. 0n this piston is a small index, F, which, when the piston is forced in until itsinner end is even with the end C of the instrument, is in contact with the bottom of the graduated slit G. For greater distinctness, the piston E is represented in the drawings as being drawn back farther than it would be in practice. When used as t0n is retracted so as to leave a tubular cav.
ity in the end C of the instrument, the size and capacity of said cavity being indicated by the index F upon the scale G, which may be graduated to grains of pulverized nitrate of silver as a standard. `The quantity to be used being determined, the index is set to the proper point on the scale, and the end C of the instrument pressed into a vessel containing the desired powder until the cavity at C is lilled with it. The instrument isthen introduced into the uterus and the powder ejected by pressing the forefinger against the milled head of piston E.
Having thus described the construction and operation of my improved instrument, I Wish it understood that I do not claim, broadly, the use of a tube and slide or piston for the introduction of remedies to diseased parts; but
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, in one instrument, of auterine sound and porte-caustic, as described.
2. rlhe combination and arrangement of the tube A, piston E, index F, and graduated slit G, in the manner and for the purpose specified.
The above specification of my said invention signed and witnessed at Washington this 17th day of November, A. D.'1862.
BENJAMIN S. BENSON.
