UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY W. GETMAN, OF ILION, NEW YORK.
" HOLDBACK FOR VEHICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 379.157, dated March. 6, 1888.
Application filed October 4,1887. Serial No 251,416. (No model.)
I 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY W. GE'IMAN', a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Ilion, in the county of Herkimer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holdbacks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. 7
This invention pertains to certain new and useful improvements in holdbacks; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of the parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure-1 is an inverted plan view of my invention, showing the holdback-strap in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof; and Fig. 3 is a crossscctional view on the line a: m, Fig. 1.
The object of this invention is to provide a holdback capable of attachment to the under side of the thill, so thatin case of accident by the breaking of the whiffletree (in the event of the horse running away) to permit the strap to readily unhitch or free itself from the holdback.
In carrying out my invention I employ a plate, A, having apertures through which screws are passed for securing the same to the under side of the thill a, and in this plate, at its rear end, is formed a small downward and outwardly projecting lug or ear, a, curved on its outer side, as shown at a. B is a long curved hook formed integral at I one end wit-h the plate A, and is caused to project forwardly, and is bent around on an approximately parallel line with curved side of the lug or car, as shown in Fig. 1, to a poin opposite its secured end.
By means of my invention the .brcechingstrap is secured directly to the hook B, and when so secured there is no rattle, and hence very little friction; and, as before stated, in the event of the whiffletree breaking and the horse running away, the strap will readily free itself from the holdback.
My invention is extremely simple, cheap, and durable.
I claim as my invention 1. The herein-described holdback, consisting of the plate, the downwardly projecting lug or car formed at one end of said plate and curved on its outer surface, and the long curved hook secured at one end to said plate, substan tiall y as shown and described 2. The combination, with a wagon thill, of the holdback secured to the under side thereof, comprising an apertured plate, a lug or car formed at one end of said plate, and a curved hook secured to said plate at one side thereof and curved around said lug or ear, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY W. GETMAN.
