- ABSTRACT In a typewriter in which different type carriers are exchangeably attachable to a support arbor which is a permanent part of the machine, a manipulative device is carried on said arbor and in one position thereof freely allows the placement of a type carrier on said 'arbor or its removal therefrom, and by movement of i the device to another position, a means thereof moves outwardly beyond said arbor onto the type carrier to secure the latter to the arbor.
- the type carrier includes a brim projecting from its top portion by which itv can be grasped and said means moves onto said brim.
- the invention relates to a device for detachable securing, operatively fast on a support shaft, 21 type carrier which has on its surface characters arranged in horizontal and vertical rows.
- the main advantage of typewriters having type carriers with sets of characters on their exterior surfaces resides therein, that they facilitate exchange of type carriers, and thus allow typing in different type styles or with inclusion of special characters by the same typewriter.
- the mounting facility for the type carrier should embody suitably a manipulative part at a location which is easily accessible from the top, and should not appreciably increase the mass of the type carrier.
- a type cylinder is removably attachable upon a mounting shaft.
- the latter has at its upper part opposite recesses wherein resiliently spreading detent elements are provided which have each an outwardly facing incline and a catching face, so that the cylinder can be pushed readily into position to become held by the catching faces.
- mounting manner has the great disadvantage that the mounting shaft'is weakened and further that the construction does not assure reliably the down seating of the type carrier.
- the grasping of the type carrier entails the soiling of the operators fingers and especially so if an ink saturated ribbon is used.
- An object of the invention is to overcome the above stated as much as possible and to create a releaseable type carrier mounting, which is manufacturable efficiently and can be operated with ease and which in kinematic regards does not entail any disadvantages.
- This object according to the invention is attained by the use of a spring clip which is mounted by pintles in holes and which holes are on an arbor member inside of recesses therein.
- a grip ring or brim has been added upon the type carrier according to the invention, the top surface of which brim constitutes a resting surface for the stated spring clip and the lower surface of which brim serves as a finger grip to lift or apply the type carrier from the machine.
- FIG. 1 is a sectional view through a type carrier at its vertical axis, and as mounted on a support arbor of a carrier shaft,
- FIG. 2 is a plan view of the type carrier and wherein a spring clip is positioned and conditioned to secure the type carrier,-
- FIG. 3 is a side elevation of the support arbor, with the spring clip'in an erect position thereon,
- FIG. 4 is a partial view of the support arbor with the spring clip in a position to hold the type carrier secured to the arbor, and,
- FIG. 5 is a plan view of the support arbor with the spring clip in the erect position seen in FIG. 3.
- a single element type carrier 1 having located on its periphery columns and rows of type characters, is shown mounted on a support arbor 2 which is unitary with a rotating shaft 3.
- Said shaft 3 has a shoulder 4 between which and the support arbor 2 it is rotatively supported in a bearing 6 of a carrier member 5.
- the latter is fastened to the rotating shaft 3 by a set screw 7 which seats on a flat face of the rotating shaft 3.
- the type carrier 1 In order to determine the angular position of the type carrier 1 in relationship to the rotating shaft 3, the type carrier 1 has a local extension 8 at the lower end of a central sleeve defining a bore adapted to receive the support arbor 2.
- the upper portion of the central sleeve which extends above the type carrier 1 includes a grasping flange, grip ring or brim 10 which is given reinforced support by four circularly spaced vertical ribs 9.
- the brim 10 has a top face 1 1 for fastener means comprising a spring clip 12 to bear thereon and the lower face 13 serves as a finger hold to lift the type carrier 1 from its downseated position on the support arbor 2, or conversely to place it thereon, as will become clear later herein.
- the spring clip has pintles 17 whereby it is pivotally mounted in cross holes 18 in the upper end of the support arbor 2 opening into diametrically opposite local recesses 19 in the support arbor 2 and two opposite wedge shaped grooves 20 extend tangentially of such bushing, are located below the holes 18 and extend at right angles thereto and to the recesses 19.
- two downwardly tapering flats 21 run parallel to the grooves 20, the recesses 19 being also therebetween.
- the grooves'20 and flats 21 in conjunction with the recesses 19 form four protuberances which have opposite recessed relation to the exterior of the support arbor 2.
- the spring clip 12 In order to lower the type carrier 1 into position on the support arbor 2, the spring clip 12 is moved substantially into the erect position shown in FIG. '3. In such position,it is conveniently possible to introduce the type carrier 1 by its bore down over the spring clip 12 into applied position onto the support arbor 2.
- the local extension 8 at the lower end of the central sleeve of the type carrier will determine the angular position ofthe type carrier 1 in relationship to the support arbor 2 and thus to the rotating shaft 3.
- the type carrier 1 becomes secured on the support arbor 2 carried on the rotatable shaft 3.
- the shaft 3 To facilitate the removal of the type carrier 1 off the arbor 2 the shaft 3, it is only necessary to swing the spring clip 12 by 90 to take up an erect position. When this is done, the legs of the spring clip 12 become first spread by gliding along the angled opposite surfaces which are afforded by said grooves 20 on the exterior of the support arbor 2, and then said legs contract to slide substantially into their upright positions inside the reliefs or recesses 19. While resiliently residing in said reliefs 19, the spring clip 12 is held in a position wherein the type carrier 1 can be freely lowered over the spring clip 12 onto the shoulder 14 of the support arbor 2.
- Removal of the type carrier from the support arbor 2 is very easily accomplished by gripping it by its brim 10. For example, by using thumb and the index finger, the under side 13 of the brim 10 can be conveniently gripped to lift and remove type carrier 1.
- the device according to the invention facilitates the operatively correct mounting of the type carrier 2 on a support arbor 2, solidly and removably and without any play and this is accomplished by use of a single springclip 12.
- the result is achieved by spring clip 12 which after the type carrier 1 is freely dropped into position, is then manipulated to snap into a holding posinon, so that the cam faces on the grooves 20 then cooperates to bias the spring clip l2.downwardly.
- the removable type carrier is devoid of any part which'requires operation for fastening or releasing it and which adds mass thereto. In order to convert the typewriter to another type style, it is therefore necessary only to exchange type carriers 1, consisting of a single part.
- the fastening device is permanently provided on the rotating shaft 3, namely on the mounting support arbor 2 and serves commonly for all different type carriers which may be applied to the machine.
- a print head comprising: a single element type carrier including type characters on its periphery and a central bore, a support arbor configured for slidable insertion into said bore, means for axially and rotatively locating the inserted support arbor relative to said type carrier, said support arbor having a predetermined length so that when said arbor means is axially and rotatively located within said bore, a portion of said arbor will project outwardly above said type carrier defining an exposed end portion, and fastener means dimensioned so that in a first axially aligned position relative to said central bore said fastener means can be freely passed there through,
- said exposed end portion including,
- cam means for biasing said fastener means downwardly into engagement with the top surface of said type carrier after said fastener means has been displaced to a second position transverse the axis of said support arbor, whereat said type carrier is held between said fastenermeans and said means for axially locating said type carrier.
- a print head comprising:
- a single element type carrier including type characters on its periphery and a central sleeve defining a bore
- said grip ring having a diameter less than the diameter of the top surface of said type carrier and greater than the diameter of said sleeve
- said support arbor having a predetermined length so that when said support arbor is axially and rotatively located within said bore, a portion of said support arbor will project outwardly above the surmeans for biasing said fastener means downwardly into engagement with the stop surface of said grip ring towards said type carrier after said fastener means has been displaced to a second position transverse the axes of said support arbor, whereat said type carrier is held between said fastener means and said means for axially locating said type carrier.
- a print head according to claim 2 wherein said biasing means comprises selectively inclined grooves cut into said exposed end portion.
- said fastener means comprises a spring clip including spaced parallel legs having end portions extending towards each other for insertion into said transverse bores, and
- said exposed end portion has at each of two opposed.
- peripheral locations at least one cam tooth configured so that in the course of movement of said fastener means from said first position to said second position said spring clip will be flexed when the legs thereof glide over the crests of said cam teeth and in said second position bear against and be biased downwardly by said cam teeth against the top surface of. said grip ring.
