Description
(No Model.)
J. J. R. PATRICK.
DENTAL TOOL.
No. 383,367. Patented May 22, 1888.
UNITED STATES PATENT JOHN J. R. PATRICK, OF BELLEVIL'LE, ILLINOIS.
DENTAL TOOL.
-LPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 388,367, dated May 22, 1888.
Application filed December 20, 1886. Renewed February 25, 1888. Serial No. 265.307. (No model.)
To 61/ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN J. R. PATRICK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Belleville, in the county of St. Clair and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shields to Prevent Gums From Laceration; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is a perspective view of my improved shield. Fig. 2 is a vertical section. Fig. 3 are details of shield and sleeve.
Myinvention relates to dentists burr-shields designed to protect the gums from laceration during the rotation of the burrin preparing the roots of natural teeth to receive the metal bands; and it consists of an adjustable sleeve so constructed that when slipped onto the hand piece of a dental engine saidsleeve will remain firmly in place, while the shield, which is attached to a free ring thatis fitted to thesleeve, revolves independently of the motion of the burr around the margin of the root, p resenting its smooth convex surface to the gum.
The shield is provided with two small wings, which rest on the tooth-root and act as a gage, at the same time imparting steadiness to the motion of the burr and the hand-piece.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates an adjustable sleeve,
which is to be slipped onto the hand-piece of a dental engine and to there remain firmly in place.
B designates the shield, which is attached to the free ring C, which is fitted to the sleeve and revolves independently of the motion of the burr around the margin of the root, presenting a smooth convex surface to the gum. The slide Bis provided near its point with two small wings, D D, which rest on the toothroot, acting as a gage and at the same time imparting steadiness to the motion of the burr E and the hand-piece F. This shield B can be used with the same advantage on the automatic mallet for the same purpose. When used with the automatic mallet, a small chisel or file pointed bit would be used in the place of a burr.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. The combination, with the hand-piece of a dental engine and a burr for said hand-piece, of a revoluble sleeve carrying agum-protect ing shield, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the adjustable sleeve, of the free ring and the revolving shield attached thereto and provided With the wings D D, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN J. R. PATRICK.
