1 NON-STRIPPING TYPE BAR DELIVERY SYSTEM BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates generally to a rod or bar mill delivery system which receives a work piece from a first mill stand and guides it along a substantially straight pass line to the next mill stand. More specifically, the present invention relates to a non-stripping delivery guide which does not require continuous or even frequent adjustment, which may be cheaply made, and which may be easily and quickly positioned at a new roll pass when a previously used pass becomes worn or a different size work product is to be rolled.
Rolling mills which manufacture relatively elongated, small diameter work products, such as rods or bars, conventionally use a type of delivery guide known as a stripper guide. A stripperguide generally has a receiving portion tapered toward and in actual contact with the two rolls at the roll pass of the mill stand. The receiving portion has an opening, at the roll pass, which must closely match the size Iofthe work product emerging from the roll pass. Close tolerances must be maintained in the manufacture, maintenance,'and adjustment of the stripperguide in order for it to function properly. Such stripper guides were used on the delivery or exit side of the roll pass only.
The term stripper.or stripping guide is derived from the fact that, should an exiting work product adhere to one of the rolls'and begin to follow the roll, rather than following a straight line along the mill pass,
thev stripper guide would strip the work product from the roll to which it had adhered.
Previously, it was believed that, if these expensive stripper guides were not used, the adhering work piece would twist itself around the roll, stop the entrance of further work product into the roll pass, and cause a tangleof the work product. Such an occurrence is commonly known as cobbling. When cobbling occurs, the mill must be shut downbecause the tangled bar cools rapidly and cannot be worked. This causes expensive delays and decreased production. a
Stripper guides have further disadvantages: they are expensive to make, require frequent maintenance, lack versatility, and are difficult to adjustbecause'a stripper guide must fit very closely to the roll pass. The close tolerance positioning and the adjustments necessarywith stripper guides increase'both the amount and the skill level of the labor required for installation and maintenance. Also, because close tolerances are required,'stripper guides must be cast to size. Furthermore, because the receiving opening of a stripper guide must .be very close to the sizeof the product passing therethrough and because a given mill typically makes manydifferent sizes 'of rods or 'bars, a large stock of stripper guides must be maintained for a given mill.;
' SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION required, and adjustments may be easily and quickly made. Because the receiving opening in this nonstripping delivery guide need not closely approximate the size and cross-sectional shape of the work product to be delivered, one nonstripping guide may be used for receiving many differently sized work products, thereby considerably reducing the inventory of delivery guides which must be kept on hand, resulting in considerable savings.
Readily adjustable support means are provided for holding theguide tubesecurely in position" so that, when a given roll pass becomes worn and unusable or a different size rod is to be rolled, the non-stripping guide may be quickly and easily adjusted. A further advantage of a non-stripping delivery guide is that it may be easily set up prior to rolling.

Vertical mill stand 9 comprises product engaging rolls 40a'and 40b, having respectively roll necks 41a and 41b and roll passes 42a and 42b, which together form roll pass 44'. through which a work piece 'or product 46 is rolled.Arrows A and A illustrate the direction of motion of rolls 40a and 40b, and Arrow B illustrates the resultingnlotion of work product 46"through roll pass 44, which shapes and sizes the work product. Referring to FIGS. 2 and 3, bracket means 21 has a longitudinal groove 32 in which rests longitudinal section 12 of work product delivery portion 10. Work product delivery portion is secured in longitudinal groove 32 by mounting clamp 34 and clamp bolts 36a and 36b. Bracket means 21 includes two projecting wing portions 22a, 22b having respective central openings 24a, 24b through which threaded post 26 slidably extends.
In order to adjust work product delivery portion 10 to a different roll pass or to center it properly at its present roll pass, bracket means 21 may be moved up or down on threaded post 26 simply by turning nut 37 disposed between wing portions 22a and 2211 on threaded post 26. Nut 37 is provided with holes 38 extending partially inwardly through nut 37 toward threaded post 26, and a torque handle may be inserted in holes 38 to turn nut 37 more easily.
Supportive bolts 39a and 39b (FIGS. 1 and 2) extend respectively through ' wing portions 22a and 22b into openings 24a and 24b for engagement with the threads of threaded post 26. These bolts are tightened to maintain-the guide in the exact position in whichit was placed by the turning of nut 37 on threaded post 26.
Referring to FIG. 2, threaded post 26 extends vertically between upper and lower braces 28a, 28b secured respectively to upper and lower housing portions 29a, 29b by bolts 30a, 30b respectively. A rest bar 33 helps to support upper housing portion 290. Threaded post 26 has upper and lower end portions 27a, 27b, each with .a squareshaped cross section, inserted respectively into openings 31a, 31b in upper and lower braces 28a and 28b respectively, said openings also having matching square-shaped crosssections in order to prevent threaded post 26 from rotating and disaligning work product delivery portion 10 from the mill pass line during use.
The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only, and no unnecessary limitations should be understood therefrom as modifications will be obvious to those skilled in the art.
What is claimed is:
l. A delivery guide for use in the production of a long thin work piece wherein the work pieceproceeds along from one 'mill stand to another mill stand and is engaged by pairs of rolls providing a plurality of selective roll passes,and said delivery guide assists in guiding the work piece from one pair of rolls to another pair of rolls, the improvement comprising:
a work piece delivery portion having a product re-- ceiving portion and an adjacent longitudinallyex tending chamber for guiding said work piece be-, tween successive roll passes; a.
bracket support means carrying the work piece deliv- 4 ery portion and having connecting means associated with a threaded post;
a pair of spaced wing portions on said bracket support means, each of said wing portions having aperture means for positioning said support means about said associated threaded post;
rotatable adjustment means operatively connected with the connecting means of the bracket support means and with the threaded post, whereby rotation of the adjustment means produces movement of the work piece delivery portion for alignment with a roll pass and also for selective movement of the work piece delivery portion from one roll pass to another roll pass.
2. The delivery guide of claim 1 wherein said rotatable adjustrnent means comprises a nut means positioned between said spaced wing members of the bracket support means for threadably engaging said threaded post whereupon rotation of said threaded nut will engage at least one of said wing members for adjustment and movement of the work piece delivery portion into alignment with the associated work piece.

The invention according to claim 1, in which said threaded post extends between a pair of frame members and said threaded post cooperates with a spaced rest bar to form an enclosed frame member between successive roll passes thereby providing a rigid support structure for the bracket support means.-

The delivery guide according to claim 1, in which said bracket support means includesa generally L- shaped platform section having a mountingportion for receiving said work piece delivery portion, and-further, said support bracket meansincluding post connecting means for mounting said bracket support with the operatively associated threaded post;
said rotatable adjustment means; comprising a nut means threadably attached to said threaded post and positioned adjacent the post connecting means of the bracket support means, whereby rotation of said nut means will produce movement of the bracket support means and provide for alignment of the work piecedelivery portion with a roll pass through which thework piece will pass and also provide for movement of the work piece delivery portion from one roll pass to another roll pass. 5. The delivery guide of claim 1, in which said spaced winged portions provide an opening therebetween for positioning of an adjustment nut which is threaded onto the threaded post whereupon selective rotation of the nut will engage the winged portions to thereby move the bracket support'means in. either two directions along the length of the threaded post.

Claims (5)

1. A delivery guide for use in the production of a long thin work piece wherein the work piece proceeds along from one mill stand to another mill stand and is engaged by pairs of rolls providing a plurality of selective roll passes, and said delivery guide assists in guiding the work piece from one pair of rolls to another pair of rolls, the improvement comprising: a work piece delivery portion having a product receiving portion and an adjacent longitudinally extending chamber for guiding said work piece between successive roll passes; bracket support means carrying the work piece delivery portion and having connecting means associated with a threaded post; a pair of spaced wing portions on said bracket support means, each of said wing portions having aperture means for positioning said support means about said associated threaded post; rotatable adjustment means operatively connected with the connecting means of the bracket support means and with the threaded post, whereby rotation of the adjustment means produces movement of the work piece delivery portion for alignment with a roll pass and also for selective movement of the work piece delivery portion from one roll pass to another roll pass.

The delivery guide of claim 1 wherein said rotatable adjustment means comprises a nut means positioned between said spaced wing members of the bracket support means for threadably engaging said threaded post whereupon rotation of said threaded nut will engage at least one of said wing members for adjustment and movement of the work piece delivery portion into alignment with the associated work piece.

The invention according to claim 1, in which said threaded post extends between a pair of frame members and said threaded post cooperates with a spaced rest bar to form an enclosed frame member between successive roll passes thereby providing a rigid support structure for the bracket support means.
4. The delivery guide according to claim 1, in which said bracket support means includes a generally L-shaped platform section having a mounting portion for receiving said work piece delivery portion, and further, said support bracket means including post connecting means for mounting said bracket support with the operatively associated threaded post; said rotatable adjustment means comprising a nut means threadably attached to said threaded post And positioned adjacent the post connecting means of the bracket support means, whereby rotation of said nut means will produce movement of the bracket support means and provide for alignment of the work piece delivery portion with a roll pass through which the work piece will pass and also provide for movement of the work piece delivery portion from one roll pass to another roll pass.
5. The delivery guide of claim 1, in which said spaced winged portions provide an opening therebetween for positioning of an adjustment nut which is threaded onto the threaded post whereupon selective rotation of the nut will engage the winged portions to thereby move the bracket support means in either two directions along the length of the threaded post.
