IMPROVEMENT INAPPARATUS FOR CLIPPING BOLTS AND RIVETS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 38,564, dated May 19, 1863.
To @ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Beit known that I, ZEPHANIAH B. OOTANT, of Greenwich Station, in the county of Huron and State of Ohio, have invented a new, useful, and improved bolt and rivet clipper for cutting off the superliuous ends of bolts and rivets, wire, rods, Sac.; and I do hereby declare that the same is described and represented in the following speciiications and drawings.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation,referring to the drawings, in which the same letters indicate like parts in each of the figures.

'lhe nature of my .invention consists in the cimbination and arrangement of certain devices, hereinafter described and represented in the drawings, for clipping or cutting ofi' the ends of bolts, rivets, wire, metal rods, and for other purposes.
In the accompanying drawings, A is the main lever, which may be made in the form shown, or in such other form as will answer the purpose intended. Itis provided with a steel jaw, B, at one end, and a convenient handle at the other. On the sides of the leverA there are two projections or lugs, C, which are perforated for the bolt D, on which thejaw E vibrates when used. This jaw E may be made entirely of steel in the form shownin the drawings, and so that the end will shut just inside ot the jaw B, when a bolt or rivet is cut or clipped oft'.
To operate the jaw E, I make two links, F F, with their ends on the bolt D, and their opposite ends are pierced by the bolt G, which passes through the stirrup H and the cam I, which turns freely on the bolt, and is worked by the lever J, which projects from the cam, as shown in the drawings. The form of the cam I is shown by dotted line in Fig. l. The stirrup H is made in the form shown, and has a set-serew, K, in the end which acts on the rear of the jaw B, where there is a countersink to receive the end of the screw.
The use of this screw is to adjust the jaws where they have been ground or worn away, and also to adapt them to the workingof the cam. The jaws are thrown open when the cam is turned back by the spring L, placed between them and fastened to the lever A by the strap M, secured with a gib and key, N, which holds it iirmly. This spring may be held by extending the end under the rear end of the jaw E, or by making the lugs C wider,
and putting a key over it. By either of these modes the strap M may be dispensed with.
The spring L may be curved in the fr rm shown by the dottedlines L, so as to allow the long end ot' a bolt or rivet to project farther in between the jaws and cut oft' a longer piece.
l contemplate the jaws may be made wider and to close at one end first, as shown in Fig. 4, to eut or shear sheet metal; and the jaws may have one or more semicircular scores in them, so as to cut round bolts or rods without flattening the side, if preferred that way; also, that the jaws may be made to close in the same plane with the handles, instead of at a right angle to them, or at any angle between the plane of the handles and a right angle, to adapt the clippers to any particular kind of work. When the jaws are made to close in a plane with the handles, the sides of the stirrup should be made thicker, or have a rib on them to stiften them.
I believe I have described and represented my improved bolt and rivet clippers so as to enable any person skilled in the art to make and use them.
I will now state what I desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In combination with the jaws B and E, the stirrup H, and screwv K, for the purpose set forth.
2. The general construction and arrangement of devices described, forming the irnproved bolt and rivet clippers or cutters.
