- the riser includes a bend portion extending downwardly from the top of the riser toward the discharge of the conduit in which is mounted a liquid nozzle,
- the liquid nozzle is universally pivotally mounted on a ball member which is guided in a socket carried by the wall of the bend portion of the conduit.
- the nozzle may be oriented in a selected direction to discharge downstream at a selected angle for varying the with drawal pressure acting on the gases which move upwardly through the riser to the receiving tank.
- Such nozzles are frequently capable of producing satisfactory low pressures and their scavenging effect is more than sufficient.
- the effect of the nozzle depends on the shape of the bend downstream of the riser portion of the conduit so that in a fixed position the nozzle cannot operate with an optimum efficiency in all circumstances. In consequence in order to obtain a sufficiently low pressure, it is frequently necessary to use a higher water pressure and also a larger volume of water. The economy of the plant is thereby affected.
- the shape of the bend of the rising tube depends on the structural arrangement of the cokeoven battery and it cannot be foreseen in what position the nozzle will be most effective. Complicated timeconsuming tests must be made which require a repeated mounting and demounting of the nozzle as well as additional mechanical work.
- the present invention provides an apparatus which includes a conduit having a riser portion with an inlet connected to the gas chamber or top of the coke oven and an opposite discharge end connected into a receiving tank.
- the conduit includes a bend between the discharge and the rider having a pivotal nozzle thereon which may be oriented in a selected angular direction for directing water into the conduit downstream of the riser.
- the nozzle is universally pivotally mounted so that it may be easily adjusted to an optimum angular position to effect a maximum efficiency in operation to withdraw the gases from the coke oven.
- the nozzle may be pivoted during use in order to permit it to be set at a desired angle to effect the most optimum gas withdrawal rate.
- the nozzle includes a ball member which is universally pivotally mounted on a receiving ball socket formed in a wall of a bend portion of the conduit.
- the nozzle may be oriented in all directions and its outer end is connected to a liquid supply conduit.
- the ball is advantageously located in the conduit in the bend portion or in the upper portion of the nozzle riser.
- a particularly advantageous arrangement is to mount the pivotal ball in the bend portion of the connecting conduit adjacent the top end of the connecting tube.
- the nozzle exterior is advantageously connected to a flexible water supply conduit. During operation it may be oriented in any selected angular position to achieve optimum gas flow. This optimum position may be easily determined within a short time by providing a manometer on the rising tube to indicate the pressure correspondikng to each individual position of the nozzle.
- a locking member retains the ball feed in the optimal operative position of the nozzle after it is set.
- Full-cone nozzles have proved to be the most suitable ones.
- the ball seat is located at the top of the connecting tube between the riser and the bend portion it is advantageous to mount the nozzles for adjustment within an angle of angle B equals 30 to 60.
- the appropriate swivelling range 8 of the ball seat is 10 to 20.
- the nozzles are also advantageously provided with swirl inserts.
- an apparatus for facilitating the withdrawal of gases from gas filled chambers such as coke ovens which comprises a connecting conduit having a riser portion with a lower end connected to the gas chamber and an upper end portion which extends downwardly from the top of the riser portion into a gas receiver and which includes a liquid nozzle which is universally pivotally mounted in said conduit downstream of the top of said riser and which includes an upper end of the nozzle which is exterior of the conduit for connection to a water supply hose and an interior end which is directed downwardly in a selected direction downstream of the riser in order to facilitate the withdrawal of the gas through the riser and bend portion through the receiving chamber.
- a further object of the invention is to provide an apparatus for withdrawing gas from a coke oven which is simple in design, rugged in construction and economical to manufacture.
- the invention embodied therein comprises an apparatus generally designated 50 for use in withdrawing gases from a gas chamber 8 of a coke oven generally designated 52 having a top wall or cover 10.
- the apparatus 50 includes a conduit generally designated 54 which includes a vertically extending riser portion 5 having a lower end which is connected into the chamber 8 and an upper portion which is connected to a bend portion 9 and a bend portion 4 which has a lower discharge end 4a which connects downwardly into a gas receiving chamber 6 defined within a collecting main 56 which is mounted on foundation supports I4 and base blocks 13 over a foundation 12 connected with the back stay H.
- a nozzle generally designated 1 is universally pivotally mounted in a wall 58 of a bend portion 9 of the conduit 54.
- the nozzle 1 includes a ball shaped mounting portion la which is mounted for universal pivotal movement in a spherical socket 2 of the wall 58.
- the inner lower end of the nozzle 1 may be directed at any selected angle in accordance with the pivotal orientation of the ball portion In in the socket 2.
- the outer or upper end of the nozzle 1 is provided with a connection flange 60 for connecting the nozzle to a flexible conduit 3. Water is supplied to the conduit 3 which is discharged in a stream from the lower end of the nozzle 1 and this spray stream may be regulated in order to achieve the desired withdraw] pressure in the riser tube portion 5 of the conduit 54.
- a locking member 7 may be adjusted in respect to the socket seat 2 to lock the nozzle 1 in an adjusted position.
- the nozzle 1 may be pivoted through an adjusting angle 8 and the swivelling angle 8 of the nozzle is also indicated.
- An apparatus for facilitating the withdrawal of gases from a gas filled chamber such as a coke oven to a gas receiving chamber comprising a connecting conduit having a riser portion with a lower end connected into the gas chamber and an opposite upper end, a bend portion extending downwardly from the upper end of said riser portion and having the lower discharge end connected to the gas collecting main, and a liquid nozzle universally pivotally mounted in said bend portion having an upper end extending exteriorly of said conduit and an opposite end directed downwardly into said conduit in a selected angular orientation downstream of said riser in order to facilitate withdrawal of the gas through the riser and bend portion to the receiving chamber.
- said bend portion includes a conduit wall having a spherical socket, said nozzle including a ball portion universally pivotally mounted on said spherical socket.
- said riser portion includes a vertical tube part, said bend portion including a separate connection tube having a vertical part connected into said riser part and a downwardly extending bend part having a wall carrying said nozzle.
- said bend part includes a top wall portion having a spherical socket carrying said nozzle.
- said nozzle includes a ball member, said conduit having a spherical cavity pivotally supporting said ball member for swivelling about an angle of from 30 to 7.
- said nozzle may swivel in the range of from 10 to 20.
- An apparatus including a swirl insert provided in said nozzle.
