UNITED STATES PATENT Eric.
JOHN B. OLEAVELAND, on INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
DEVICE FOR SNAPPING MEDICATED DUST-BALLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 390,455, dated October 2, 1888.
Application filed February 10. 1887. Serial No. 227.097. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that l, J OHN B. OLEAVELAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Devices for Snapping Medicated Dust-Balls, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention relates to an improved means for striking the exterior of a package containing medicated powders.
The object of my improvement is to provide a substitute for the usual method of expelling the medicated dust from a dust ball or package, the usual method heretofore employed for this purpose being that of snapping the ball or package with the finger of the operator.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.
Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the manner of operating the device. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of a medicated dustpackage, commonly known as the carbolic smokebail, and my device attached thereto. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the snapper.
A is a dustpackage, which consists of a medicated powder inelosed in acloth covering,
through the meshes of which the powder may be forced in the form of a fine dust-cloud that may be inhaled by the operator by a smart tap on the exterior of the package.
Bis a bent lever formed ot'sheet metal. Lever B is secured to a spiral spring, 0, the ends of which terminate in a pair of pins, dd. As shown, lever B is secured to the spring by a central loop, 0, which is first formed in the wire of which the spring is formed, and the ends of the wire are then passed through the lever at its angle and the spring afterward formed. The springmay, however, be formed separately and the lever be secured thereto by other means, as by soldering.
The device is secured to the package by thrusting the pins through the package just above where it is tied and then clinching the ends'of the pins, as indicated atf, Fig. i, and in dotted lines in Fig. 3. In this position there is a slight tension on spring 0, and the upper end of the lever rests with a slight force against the ball.
In operation the free end '5 of lever B is depressed by the finger of the operator and then suddenly released, when the recoil of the spring throws the upper end of the lever sharply against the ball, thus expelling the medicated powder in a fine dust. For the purpose of allowing the dust to escape more freely, the end of the lever may be perforated, as atj, Fig. 3.
It is sometimes desirable to use my device Without securing it permanently to the package. For this purpose I secure to the springa short handle H, by means of which the device can be held closely against the package between the thumb and forefinger of the op erator, as shown in Fig. 1.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, with a package of the class described, of the spring adapted to be secured to the package and the bent lever mounted on the spring, whereby the lever is thrown forcibly against the package by the recoil of the spring, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the spring having the central loop, 6, and terminating in pins (Z d, and the bent lever B, secured to said loop, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination, with a package of the class described, of the bent lever, the spring on which the bent lever is mounted, whereby the lever is thrown forcibly against the package by the recoil of the spring, and the handle secured to the spring, whereby the device may be held against the package, all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
