CALVIN M. REED, OF HOPPENVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
SASH HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent. N 0. 393,264, dated November 20, 1888.
Application filed May 3, 1888. Serial No. 172,665. (No model.)
To all whom it mdy concern.-
Be it knownthat I, CALVIN M. REED, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hoppenville, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented new and useful Improvements in Sash-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a novel, simple, cheap, and efficient device for looking or holding window'sashes from movement in either direction; and to such end it consists in the features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation showing portions of a window sash and frame with my invention applied thereto, the parts being broken away to show the interior of the lockcase; Fig. 2,detail views showing theinterior of the lock-case with the operating-rod detached. Fig. 3 is a detail edge View of one of the cams.
In order to enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe the samein detail, referring to the drawings, whcrein The numeral 1 indicates the lock-case having a faceplate, 2, and adapted to be set into a mortise provided in the window-sash. The case may or may not be in one piece, and is secured in position by screws passed through screw-holes in the face-plate. A pair of similar cams, 3, are eccentrically pivoted by pins 4 inside the case and have their serrated or other suitable acting cam-faces normally projecting from the case to bind against the window-frame, and these cams are so arranged that one prevents upward movement of the sash and the other downward movement thereof, whereby the sash can be locked against moving in either direction. The cams are each provided at their inner ends, behind their pivot-pins 4, with recesses to form a lug, 5, and tail-piece 6, the two lugs being arranged adjacent to each other to be acted on by the inner end of a horizontally -sliding rod, 7, which extends from the rear of the lock-case through the window-sash in a position to be operated by the hand. A spring, 8, arranged in the lock-ease, is provided with two springarms, 9, acting, respectively, on the tail-pieces 6 of the cams, to automatically throw the faces of the cams outward and cause the same to act as locks and prevent movement of the sash.
\Vhen it is desired to release the sash for the purpose of adjusting it, the sliding rod 7 is moved toward the cams, thus causing its inner end to act upon the two adjacent lugs 5, and so swing the cams that their acting faces will be withdrawn into the case. As soon as the rod is released, the spring, acting on the tail-pieces 6, throws the acting faces of the cams outward to their locking position.
The lengthwise sliding rod 7 is provided with a laterally-projecting shoulder or shoulders, 10, to act on a fixed part of the case and thereby stop the rearward sliding movement of the rod when the latter is released and the spring-arms 9 throw the cams to theirlocking positions. The shoulders also serve to retain the slide-rod in the case, so that it is a permanent part thereof, and is held from misplacement.
By recessing the inner ends of the cams to form the adjacent lugs 5, the inner end of the operating rod 7 rests in said recesses flush with the sides of the cams, so that a very narrow lock-case can be employed. The rod 7, acting on both oams, operates them simultaneously when the rod is pushed inward, and by this means of operating the cams a very simple but efficient device is provided. To operate the two cams simultaneously by a pushrod, the latter is arranged to move in a line between the two pivots of the cams.
The lock-case can be applied to a windowframe to act on the sash instead of on the sash to act on the window-frame without changing the character of my invention.
What I claim is- The combination of the case having an opening in its rear, pivoted swinging springimpelled cams having disconnected adjacent lugs, and the lengthwise sliding rod having its inner end abutting against said lugs and provided with a shoulder acting on a fixed part of the case to stop the rearward sliding movement of the rod when released from pressure and to retain the rod in the ease, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
