SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 394,529, dated December I1, 1888.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER 'HITE, of the city ot' St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Iniprovelnent in Hydrants, ot' which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, ret'- erence being had to the accompanying drawing's, forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure I is a vertical section illustrative of my invention. Fig. II is a side elevation. Fig. III is a detail front elevation, part in section on line III III, Fig. II. Fig. IV is a top view. Fig. V is a transverse section taken on line V V, Fig. I. Fig. VI is a detail section of the lower end of the outer cylinder or tube, showing the inner pipe or tube in side view, and showingI the valve closed. Fig. VII is a detail section through the outer cylinder or tube, and also through the inner pipe, showing the valve open. Fig. VIII is a transverse section on line VIII VIII, Fig. VI. Fig. IX is a detail view illustrating the device for use as a street washer or sprinkler.
My invention relates to certain improvements in hydrants; and it consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, l represents an outer cylinder or tube inclosed at its upper portion in a housing' or casing, 2.
3 represents the water-pipe, which is located within the outer tube, l, and which extends from the bottoni to near the top ot' the tube. The top of this pipe screws into a plug or block, 4, which is cast with an opening, 5. On the block 4L is also cast a spout, (i, and a projection or face, 7. (See Fig. V.) The upper end of the block is reduced to form a stein portion, S, that extends through a cap, f), and to whichthe operating-lever 100 is pivoted at 10. On the cap is an arm, ll, to which the lever is pivoted at 12. The upper end, 1S, of the housing or casing is provided with a straight vertical slot, I4, to receive the spoilt 6. This slot is closed above the spout by means ot' a tongue or extension, l5, formed upon or-secured to the cap 9, (see Figs. I and III,) whose width is equal to that ot' the slot 14, so that it may lit within the latter flush with the housing, as shown.

The cap is held in the part l ot' the housing by any suitable means. The slot 1J. is made somewhat longer than I and III, to allow the spout to niove up and down with the pipe 3 in opening and closing the hydrant-valve, and the escape ot' water (that may get between the pipe 3 and the part '123 of the housing, or between the pipe 3 and the outer tube or cylinder l) is prevented by lneans ot' the lip or enlargement 7, forlned upon the block l. This enlargement is formed to the contour ot' the inner surface ot' the housing, so as to close the slot, as shown in Figs. I and Y.
The cap t) is formed with an apex, 5U, from where it is curved outwardly and downwardly, as shown at 5l. The body of the lever is formed in the shape of a hood, 52, and the object of thus constructing the hood and the cap is, that the water escaping' through the cap around the stem 8 will be deflected downwardly by the hood 52 of the lever onto the incline 5l ot' the cap, and will run ottl the periphery ot' the cap onto the ground, and will not enter between the housing and cylinder to rust the parts.
The valve, which is composed of a shortI piece of tube, lh, and rings lf), is secured to the lower end of the pipe 3. (See Figs. VI and VII.)
20 represents the inlet-neck, to which the pipe from the main is connected. The water passes (when the valve is opened) through this neck and up through the pipe il, as indicated by arrows in Fig. VII, and when the valve is closed, as shown in Fig. VI, this passage ot' the water is prevented and the hydrant is thus closed.
To allow the water to drain from the pipe 3 when the hydrant is closed, the tube lb is provided with perforations 2l, which, when the valve is closed, coincide with or come opposite the diameter of the spout. t3, as shown in Figs.

Toallow the escape of water that may get between the pipe 3 and cylinder 1, I form -a perforation, 23, in the latter above the tube 18, (see Figs. VI and VIL) through which such water may escape. This valve part of my invention may be applied to a street sprinkler or washer, as shown in Fig. IX, where the cap (which would be in line with the pavement) is provided with a cup, 24vhaving a lid or cover, 25, pivoted to it, and the upper end of therpipe 3 `is provided with win gs, one of which has a notch, A26, to receive a button, 27, pivoted to the cap at 28. When the hydrant is opened, this button is turned into the `notch 26,*and the valve is thus held open. The up- -perend of the lpipe 3 is provided witha neck, ,29, for the attachment of a hose. The .hood A52 also serves to protect .the stem 8 and cap `9 from .snow and sleet in winter.
The portion of the tube l8.between the top and second rings 1-9 isgrooved to forman annular chamber, 60, opposite the perforations 21, and which delivers the water to theescape 22 from :allaround the tube.
I claim las my invention- 1. In a hydrant, the combination, with the water-pipe and a block on the end of said pipe provided with a spout, of a housing having a slot to receive the spout, a cap on the housing, and a downwardly-projecting tongue on said cap, whose width is equal to that of the slot, and which is adapted to fit within and close the upper portion of said slot, and the said block resting against the inner surfaces of said tongue and housing, whereby the slot is always closed, as set forth.
