' E. C. SHERWIN.
HOLDBAGKl No. 394,730. Patented Deo. 18, 1888.
UNITED STATESl PATENT OFFICE.
EDVIN C. SHERIVIN, (.)F BRANDON, VISCONSIN.
HOLDBACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,730, dated December 18, 1888.
v Application filed July 16, 1888. Serial No. 280,053. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.' l
Be it known that I, EDWIN C. SHERWIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brandon, in the county of Fond du Lac and State of IVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holdbacks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to holdbackfastenings for vehicle-thills, and has for its'object to provide a fastening for securing the breeching-straps to the thills that will be simple, cheap, and efficient, and which will preclude any accident arising from leaving the said breeching-straps fastened to the thills when unhitching the horse and letting the thills drop, and which will permit the breeching to become readily disengaged from the thills when it is drawn forward, whether by design o." by accident.
The improvement consists of a fastening composed of two plates that are hinged together at their front ends, the base-plate having a tongue and the fastening-plate having an opening to receive the tongue and an eye or loop to receive the strap, as hereinafter willbe more fully described and claimed, and shown in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan view of a pair of thills having my improvement applied; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the fastening, showing it open; Fig. 3, a top edge view of the fastening, showing' its operation by dotted lines; and Fig. 4, a modification.
The base-plate A-that is, the plate which is designed to be fastened to the thills-is provided with the openings a, through which screws or other fastening means pass to secure it to the thills, and with the tongue C. The fastening-plate B, hinged at one end to the base-plate, is provided with the opening l) to receive the tongue, and with the loop D at its free end to permit the passage of the strap. The tongue C is sufficiently long to prevent its accidental displacement from the In practice the fastening is applied so that i its hinge end is forward, and is secured in any suitable manner to the thills, the breeching-strap E being passed through the loop D from the outside between the plates A and B and slipped over the tongue C. The strain being rearward and inward against the closed end of the loop D, holds the fastening-plate closed. If from any cause the st-rain on the strap is forward, the plate B' will open and the strap will become disengaged from the tongue and slip out through the loop and be freed from the thills.
In Fig. 4 the base-plate is shown provided with a lug, e, which crowds the strap in the loop D of the fastening-plate and relieves the tongue of some of the strain, the other parts of the fastening being substantially the same as hereinbefore described and claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
l. The herein-described holdback composed of two plates hinged together at one end, the hinge-joint being sufficiently wide to permit the plates to lie parallel and have a space between them, one plate having the curved tongue, the other plate having an opening for the passage of the tongue, and a loop at its end for the reception of the strap, substantially as described.
The holdback hereinbefore described, composed of two plates hinged together at one end, one plate having a tongue and a lug, the other plate having an openin g for the passage of the tongue, and a second opening for the reception of the lug and the passage of' the strap, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
E. C. SHERVVIN..
