H. E. ADAMS. ATTACHMENT FOR DESKS.
Patented July 2, 1889.
7 M29 is? J T UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
, HARRY E. ADAMS, OF IVHEELING, WVEST VIRGINIA.
ATTACHMENT FOR DESKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 406,121, dated July 2, 1889.
Application filed November 28, 1888. Serial No. 292,074. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HARRY E. ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at NVheeling, in the county of Ohio and State of WVest Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Desks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to attachments for desks, the purpose thereof being to provide a simple and convenient device capable of being attached to and disconnected from a desk,
, and capable also of longitudinal adjustment thereon, whereby the arm of a book-keeper may have support, and whereby also a convenient support is provided for a book, instrument, or other device to be used in conjunction with the book or device lying upon the main portion of the desk.
The invention is particularly adapted to the use of book-keepers to provide a rest or support for the arm when entries are to be made upon the lower portion of the page, in which cases the elbow projects more or less beyond the edge of the desk. and is in the ordinary desk without support.
My invention consists in the several novel features of construction and new combinations of parts, hereinafter set forth, an "I then definitely pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is an end elevation showing my invention. Fig. 2 is a partial front elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 1.
In the said drawings, the reference-n umeral 1 designates a desk of any suitable form and construction hav ng a desk-top or table 2, which is preferably sloped in the usual manner. Upon the body 1 of said desk, and upon the front thereof under the desk-top 2, I attach a rail 8, extending from one end of the desk toward the other and parallel with the projecting edge of the top 2, the rail being attached a short distance beneath this projecting edge and provided with a groove or channel 4 in its upper surface.
The numeral 5 denotes a shelf or support of any desired form and size, to the edge of which is hinged a strip 6, having upon one side a rib '7, adapted to fit in the channel 4 ofthe rail 3. Upon the under face of the support is hinged an arm. 8, the free end 00f which is adapted to engage with a bracketrail 9, attached to the front of the desk at a suitable distance below the rail 3.
The manner of using the device is evident. 5 5 The end of the strip 6 being introduced within the space between the rail 3 and the projecting edge of the desktop, and the rib 7 being placed in the channel. 4, the rib is then slid longitudinally upon the rail 3 until the brace S can engage the bracket-rail 9.
The shelf or auxiliary support 5 is then adjusted laterally from time to time, as circumstances may require, the strip 6 sliding on the rail 3 and the brace 8 being adjusted on. the bracket-rail 9.
WVhen not in use, the arm 8 may be disengaged from the rail9 and the shelf dropped into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
\Vhen once mounted, the auxiliary shelf or support may be readily moved or adjusted to any point upon the front of the desk.
WVhat I claim is-- 1. In a desk or table, an adj ust-able auXiliary support consisting of a shelf having a ribbed strip hinged to one edge and inserted between a grooved rail fastened upon the front of the desk or table beneath the projecting edge of the top, said support being provided with a brace or arm engaging with a bracket-rail mounted on the desk-front beneath the grooved rail, substantially as described.
2. In a desk or table having a top 2, the edge of which projects over the front of the desk and provided with a grooved rail 3, fastened to the body of the desk below said projecting edge, a support or shelf 5, having a ribbed strip 6 hinged to its edge and en- 0- gagingin the space between the grooved rail and the projecting edge of the desk, and an arm 8 hinged at one end to the under face of the shelf, its other end engaging a bracketrail 9, substantially as described.
-In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of tWo witnesses.
HARRY E. ADAMS.
