Description

(No Model.)
s. E. CORNELL.
BOX 03 OANISTE No. 408,954. Pat Mu 13, 1889.
A TTOHNE Y UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
STEPHEN E. CORNELL, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
BOX OR CANISTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,954, dated August 13, 1889.
Application filed May 8, 1889. Serial No. 310,063. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN E. CORNELL, a'citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn,in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes or Canisters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to boxes or canisters for packing articles of food such as crackers or biscuits and especially that class of such boxes having the face provided with a glass plate for showing the contents.
My invention consists in a certain novel attachment of the glass face-plate, as hereinafter fully described, wherebyI obtain a simple and effective joint and one insuring safety against breakage of the glass plate, while it permits easy introduction or removal of said plate.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of abox or canister embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a Vertical section thereof. Fig. 3 represents a horizontal section thereof.
Similar letters indicate similar parts.
The letter A indicates the body of the box or canister, having the usual lid B, hinged to the edge of an opening C in its top, the box, with its lid, being generally of sheet metal. 0n the open face of said box A is secured a frame I), also of sheet metahpreferably brass, which is solid or in one piece, and the inner edges 6 of which are inclined in a direction inwardly to the box, as clearly shown, each of said edges, moreover, coincidirlg with the other, and at a point next to said frame inside of the box is the usual glass face-plate E, which bears against said inclined edges of the face-frame, and is held in position by means of back-stops G I, each of which in turn bears against said glass plate on the inside of the box, one at the top and the other metal and is secured to the box at the proper 5c point. Each of said inclined inner edges 6 of the solid face-frame is left entirely free or detached, with the effect of preserving its inherent elasticity, and by the construction of the back-stops G I each also is rendered elastic; hence the glass plate F is confined between two yielding contact-surfaces, tending not only to produce a tight joint, but also to obviate a breakage of the glass from that source, while by the hinged condition of the stop G it may be readily adjusted to permit introduction or removal of the plate, as for cleaning purposes.
If desirable, the frame D may be nickelplated or ornamented in any other Way.
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A show box or canister having on its face a solid sheet-metal frame with inwardly-inclined inner edges, each left free to preserve its elasticity, combined witha glass face-plate bearing against said inclined edges of the face-frame, and with elastic back-stops on the inside of the top and bottom of the box bearing against said glass plate to fasten the same, each of said stops extending the width of the box, and one being hinged to swing toward and from the glass plate, substantially as and for the purpose described.
STEPHEN E. CORNELL.
