TOOL FOR APPLYING SEALING-WAX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 410,330, dated September 3, 1889.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, WILLIAM A. PORTER- FIELD and JOHN B. SHANNOFELT, J12, citizens of the United States, residing at Bellaire, in the county of Belmont and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools for Use in Applying Sealing- Wax; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in devices for use in applying scaling-wax in sealing cans or packages; and it has for its object to provide a simple and serviceable tool of this description, by the use of which the work can be done much more satisfactorily and with greater expedition, and at the same time with a greater saving in the amount of wax used.
To the above ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists in the novel construction of the sealing-tool hereinafter described, shown in the appended drawings, and then specifically defined in the claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sealing-iron constructed in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the head of the tool.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the sealing-iron, the head B of which is cast integral with the shank or extension 0, and is preferably of iron or copper.
One of the essential features of the invention consists in the peculiar form of the head B and of the chamber D therein, communicating with the extreme end of the head by the narrow-triangular outlet-passage E. It will be observed that the rear or base portion of the head B is cast thick and heavy, and that from a point a short distance from the extreme rear end of the head it is gradually narrowed toward the free end of the head. The chamber D, which is formed within the upper face of the head B, is substantially pear-shaped, as shown, with the enlarged portion at the extreme rear portion of the head, and from this enlarged portion the chamber gradually lessens in diameter as it approaches the free end of the head, and it terminates at the extreme end of the head in a narrow triangular passage E. The shank O of the tool is preferably curved, as shown, and is provided at its end with a suitable handle F.
In use the head of the tool is placed in the fire until it has been heated to a sufficient degree to melt the sealing-wax. The wax is then placed in the chamber and is held in the left hand of the operator, with one end of the stick resting against the bottom of the chamber, where it is melted by the heat of the iron. The operator holds the tool in his right hand, and as the wax is melted it flows throughthe narrow outlet E, as will be readily understood, and is applied to the seam to be sealed by simply drawing the tool-point over the seam.
WVhat we claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described tool for use in applying sealing-wax, the same consisting of the head B, having its base portion thickened in order to retain the heat, and having an extension or shank and handle, as described, and having formed in its upper face a substantially pear-shaped chamber D, communicating with the free end of the head by means of a narrow triangular outlet-passage E, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
