MOP-HEAD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 414,143, dated October 29, 1889.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CHARLES B. CURTIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bangor, in the county of Penobscot and State (if Blaine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mop-Heads; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improved mophead for clamping and holding the ordinary mog-rag as used for household purposes, and it is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an isometric view of my improved mop-head attached to ahandle and showing the spring-clamp in a closed position. Fig. 2 is asimilar view of myiinproved InOphead, showing a little different shape of the base of the head and the spring-clamp open in position for receiving the mop-rag. Fig. is an isometric view of my improved mop-head with rag inserted and ready for use.

Similar letters of reference refer to correspondingly like parts throughout the different figures.

The object of my invention is to produce an improved mop-head that will be of simple and light construction and easily and quickly operated.

My improved mop-head consists of a D- shaped casting A, having a straight base 6 and a handle-socket 0, cast upon and projecting from the center of the portion of the casting opposite the straight side, and into this socket C is fitted a handle D of sufficient length to suit the person using the same. The base 6 is preferably cast with a longitudinal groove extending its entire length, within which are situated short spurs i, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. A springclamp B is formed by bending spring-wire to conform to the base and ends of the casting A and turning the remaining portion of the wire into spiral springs 71, until sufficient elasticity is obtained, and then inserting and securing the ends of the said wire in holes drilled in the eastingA to receive them. By this arrangement a spring-clamp is formed, the bail portion of which passes down the surface of the ends of the casting A and along the base or straight side of the latter, the springs it always keeping the bail portion of the springclamp firmly pressed against the D-shaped casting A. A thumb-piece to raise and operate the spring-clamp Bis formed by either twisting the center portion of the Wire previous to bending into a small loop f, as shown in Fig. 1, or soldering on a separate loop after the clamp is formed, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.

My improved mop-head is used in the ordinary way, and the mop-rag is placed therein by raising the spring-clamp B by means of the thumb-piece f and inserting the mop-rag between the opening and around the base of the D-shaped casting. Then by letting go of the spring-clamp B it springs back in place into position against one side of the rag and presses the latter into the groove of the cast ing and against the short spurs therein, thus firmly holding the said mop-rag against any strain and drawing thereon while using. If the D-shaped casting were constructed without the groove and spurs above described, the pressure of the spring-clamp B would be sufficient to hold the 1nop-rag in place; but to guard against possible withdrawing of the rag, such as would be occasioned by'catching one end of the same in slivers in the floor or by stepping on the said rag While using, I think it preferable to provide them with spurs, as shown and above described.

The manner of removing the mop-rag is simply the reverse of inserting the same, and by raising the spring-clamp and drawing upon one end of the rag it is easily and quickly withdrawn.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

An improved mophead consisting of the D-shaped casting having a handle-socket pro jecting fromthe portion opposite its straight side, and a spring-wire clamp bent to conform to the shape of the casting and having its ends formed in spiral sprin s and rigidly confined to the said casting, substantially as shown, and for the purpose described.
