No. 420,097.. Patented Jan. 28,1890.

UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES H. PHILPOTT, OF RATON, TERRITORY OF NEIV MEXICO.
eURcLAR-ALARn/l.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 42,097, dated January 28, 1890. Applicaticn filed November 14, 1889. Serial No. 330,264. (No model.)
T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. PHrLroTr,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Referring to the drawings which form a partu of this case, Figure l shows my improved alarm attached to a door opening inward, or toward you. Fig. 2 shows it in position between the meeting-rails of a window-sash. Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of the alarm, showing the head in section. Fig. t is a modification of the fastening-plate. Fig. 5 is the reverse of-the plate shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a view of the head detached, and Fig.' 7 is a view of the alarm attached to a door opening outward, or from you.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the head of the detonator; C, an orifice therein; D, a cup-like depression having a central recess for the fulminate or other explosive or anvil.
E is a plunger-rod having a firing-pin h on its inner end.
H is a recoil-spring encircling the plunger in the orifice and bearing against a stud or pin at one of its ends, and having its opposite end bearing against the upper end of the orifice.
From a short section of chain I, which is secured to the outer end of the plunger-rod, depends the fastening-plate K, which has a lug or projection thereon, and an opening near said lug, which has one or both of its faces provided with rasp-teeth for engaging the meeting edges of the door and its frame or of a window-sash. y
The head A is made quite heavy and is preferably pear-shaped, with the recesses therein for the explosive material, as above described.
The operation of the alarm isvery simple and it is readily applied to use. The explosive is placed in the recess D and itis pressed in place by the firing-pin h, which is normally in slight contact therewith through the medium of the spring G. The plate K is placed between any two desired meeting surfaces, either in a door or window, where it is held by means of the rasp-teeth k, which take hold of the wood. Should any one attempt to open the door or raise the sash, the lugL will be struck thereby and the plate forced out, whenthe weight of the head A will carry the whole device vertically downward until it strikes some object, when the explosive will be red by means of the pin h.
The modification shown in Fig. Il is oentrally bent at right angles, the better to be inserted between the window-sash.
W'hen not in use, the device may be suspended from any point by means of the hole l.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new is-'- A detonating alarm having a solid bulblike head, an orifice therein, a depression .or anvil for the explosive in the bottom of said orifice, a spring-actuated plunger for firing the explosive, and a securing-plate fastened by means of a chain to the outer end of the plunger-rod, the said plate being provided with rasp-teeth for engagement with the objects between which it is inserted, and lug or stud for starting said plate, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES H. PHILPOTT.
