UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
JOHN P. ANDERSON, ()F OLSBURG, KANSAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WV. XV. ALLEN, OF SAME PLACE.
SNAP-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 424 637, dated April 1, 1890. Application filed August 10, 1889. Serial No. 320,352. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN P. ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Olsburg, in the county of Pottawatomie and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snap-Hooks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same My invention relates to certain novel features involved in the construction of a snap hook whereby great strength, simplicity, and safety are secured. This result is attained by means of the device hereinafter referred to, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved snap complete. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of Fig. 1 on a line with Y Y. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of Fig. 1 on a line with X X.
For convenience of describing the several parts of my invention I designate the same by means of letters, of which A represents the body proper, which may be made of a suitable band of steel, the size of which will be determined by the size of the snap to be produced, and has its thicker end bended back upon itself to form the loop E of the snap proper, while the other end properly shaped is to be bent for forming the ring 1), to serve as a means for attaching the strap or rope thereto, and after such ring has been formed a suitably-shaped continuation of the body A will form the tongue proper to of my improved snap-hook, which reaches sufficiently to pass under the overreaching end of loop E, justreferred to. After the tongue Ct passes slightly under the overreaching loop E it is to be provided on its under side, at a point immediately under the end of loop E, with a downwardly-reaching tooth a, while the body A is to be provided with a hole to receive such tooth, as shown.
By this description it will be seen that the essential feature of novelty comprised in my invention consists in the integral formation of a snap from one piece of steel by bending and forming the same, as shown, so as to form the body A, ring D, tongue a, tooth a, and overreaching loop E. A sliding collar B is to be provided upon the body A, as shown in Fig. 1, the object of which is to lend additional safety to this snap by sliding the same forward upon such body, so that the notch in the upper surface of same will be received by the slot (1-, thus preventing the tooth from passing downward through the opening Ct, provided in the body A, as shown.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an improved article of manufacture, a snap -hook consisting of ring D, shank A, hook E, and tongue a, the shank A provided with an aperture and the tongue 0. provided with the depending tooth a, adapted to enter into said aperture, and the slide B, having the cut-out portion and adapted to lock the tooth a, substantially as described, and for the purpose named.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN P. ANDERSON. Witnesses:
G. H. ALLEN, C. B. CARLSON.
