Description

J. W. ORAM.
WHITEWASH BRUSH.
Patented June 24, I890.
INVENTOR:
WITNESSES: W ymzw j v w (0% UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN ORAM, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
WHlTEWASH-BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 480,877, dated June 24, 1890.
Application filed March '7, 1890. Serial No. 342,966. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN WV. ORAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vhitewash-Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in whitewaslrbrushes, and is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of the bristle-block and the row of bottom bristle-knots. Fig. 2 is a side view of the head-block. Fig, 3 is a cross-section of the bristle-block with the band and all the bristles attached. Fig. at is a side view of the completed brush. Fig. 5 is a crosssection of the entire brush.
The brush has two separate blocks A B. The block A is a narrow one and has a longitudinal groove 0 on two opposite sider, a narrow bottom edge cl, and a broader top edge e. The bottom edge (I of the block A has holes bored to receive bunches or knots f of bristles, and crosswise of each groove ca row of side bristles g is placed and secured. The means for securing these side rows of bristles consist of an outside band h, extending entirely around the bristles and the block A, and a row of tacks i on each side driven through the band and bristles into the block, said rows being parallel with the grooves c. The top ends of the side rows g are trimmed even with the surface of the top edge e of the narrow block A. Thus all three rows of the bristles towit, the two side rows 9 and the bottom row f between the side rows-are secured to the narrow block: A. If desired, cement may also be used, as usual, to assist in securing the bristles. The outside band It should be metal, and preferably consists of tin-plate, and has a concave-convex groove with the convex side facing the groove 0 in the block. This band It is broad enough to project upward above the top edge e of the narrow block A, as at h in Fig. 3, and thereby a socket la is formed over the entire top of the block A. By making the groove larger than the groove in the side of the block A and forming a bead 71 even with the top of the block the upper ends of the bristles are not compressed to such an extent as they are just below it, or within the groove in the side of the block. In this manner the bris ties are not so apt to come out, and the cement if applied to the top of the block will pass down among the ends of the bristles and secure them more firmly than would be the case if the bristles were compressed so tightly that the cement could not penetrate among them. The head-block B is secured in the socket 7r. This 11 cad-block has at its base two side flanges Z, each being in the present instance beveled, and the base is thus broader than if. there were no side flanges. The flanged base of the head-block B sets in the socket 7 and comes in contact with the top surface 6 of the bristle-block. The upward projecting edge h of the band surrounds the base-flanges Z, and screws, nails, or tacks m driven through said band edge h enters sidewise into the base of the head-block, and thus hold the head-block firmly.
This brush has great fullness for the quantity of bristles used, and is cheaply made and is durable.
Having described my invention, I olaim l. A whitewash-brush having in combination an elongated bristle-block A, provided with a groove 011 two opposite sides, a row g of bristles on each side, secured crosswise of each groove, a row f'of bristles on the bottom between said side rows, and a head-block 13, secured to said bristle-block.
2. A wl1itewashbrush having in combination a bristle-block A, provided with a groove on two opposite sides, a row g of bristles on each side, secured crosswise of each groove, a row f of bristles on the bottom between said side rows, a metal band surrounding the bristles on the bristle-block, and with one edge projecting upward above said block and forming a socket, said band being provided with an outwardly-projecting bead 7L2 at the top of the bristles g, a head-block having base-flanges which fit in said socket, and nails through the band entering sidcwise into the said base.
In testimony whereof I affix my signaturein the presence of two witnesses.
