Description

(No Model.) I
A. OURRI-ERV ANTI RATTLER FOR THILLFGOUPLINGS. .No. 433,397. Patented July 29, 1890.
/ W/ESSES: v 6g l/VVE/VTOH UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED CURRIER, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGN OR OF ONE-HALF 7 TO DANIEL H. POWERS, OF SAME PLACE.
ANTE RATTLER FOR THILL-COUPLI NGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 433,397, dated July 29, 18911).
Application filed February 1, 1890. Serial No. 338,924. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED GURRIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Anti-Rattlers for Thill-Couplings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable IO others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. I
My invention relates to an anti-rattler for thill-couplings; and the object of my invention is to produce an article of this nature I 5 which, by reason of its many advantages, will recommend itself to persons requiring the use of such a device; and it consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the various parts hereinafter described, and
particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a device embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a de- 2 5 tail showing plan of tie detached; Fig. 3, a detail showing front elevation of spring.
Like letters of referenceindicate like parts throughout the drawings.
A represents a section of an axle; B, aclip having jaws B for the thill-irons; O, the thillirons attached to a section of thill, and D the thill-bolt securing thill to clip.
The tie-bar E has an enlarged portion J for strengthening it at that point, a shoul- 5 der I, and pendent armG forward of the axle.
The arm G is setback from the shoulder, leaving it prominent to provide a fulcrum for the spring-lever F, and said arm is provided with a horizontal bolt-aperture near its lower end.
0 The extreme point of the shoulderI is substantially in line with the center of the eyebolt, and the back of the arm G is substantially in line with the rear of the eyebolt.
F is a reverse curved spring-lever having 5 its back against the shoulder I for afulcrum, and has its upper portion curved to fit the barrel of the thill-iron, and is provided with an oblong opening K to receive the bolt II and upon which it has a vertical movement for accommodating itself to the varying dis 5o tances between the two bolts D and H for taking up lost motion. The bolt H is an ordinary short carriage-bolt, and is provided with a retaining-nut.
The method of applying and using the device and its manner of operation to prevent rattling of the thills in the jaws of the clip is obvious.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with the thill and clip, the tie-bar E, having the enlarged portion J, the shoulder I, in line with the center of the thill-bolt, the depending arm G, set back from the shoulder and forward of the axle, provided with the bolt-opening near the lower end, the spring F, having its upper portion curved to lit the thill-bolt barrel, and arranged between the jaws of the clip back of the barrel and in contact therewith, and provided at its lower end with an elongated slot K, for automatic adjustment of the spring slipped onto the bolt and against the head theredf, and having its back against the end of the shoulder I and the bolt H arranged in said bolt-opening and provided with its retainingnut, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination, with the thill and clip, of the tie-bar E, having integral shoulder I, rounded on its acting face, and integral depending arm G set back from the shoulder, the thill-bolt D, the reverse curve spring-lever F, having bearing midway its length 011 the rounded shoulder and at its lower end formed with elongated slot extending in the direction of the length of the lever, and the bolt passed through said slot, and an opening in the lower end of the arm G and provided with head and a nut, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALFRED CURRIER.
