DEVICE FOR APPLYING TIGHTENERS TO WIRE FENCES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 433,476, dated August 5, 1890.

Be it known that I, CHARLES KNOPP, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVinona, in the county of Winona and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for ApplyingTighteners to Wire Fences; and Ido declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to devices for applying tighteners to wire fences; and it consists in certain improvements in such utensils, as hereinafter described and claimed.

I11 the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the fastening-tongs with a fastening-pin in position between the jaws. Fig. 2 is a detached view of the tighteningpin. Fig. 3 represents the tightene'r applied to the wire of a fence.

A designates the tongs which are used in applying the tighteners, the two parts of said tongs being pivoted together at a. B indicates two rollers, which are pivoted to the jaws or forward parts of the tongs, the said rollers being beveled or rounded inwardly at their edges, as shown. The said jaws at their forward extremities are provided with opposite apertures or sockets, as seen at c, to receive the ends of a tightening-pin d, which is to form apart of the tightener. The pin d is provided at its ends with journals or projections to enter the sockets c of the jaws. The said projections on the ends of the pin are away from its center line, as shown, so that the pin may be turned and its outer surface brought to a line with the forward ends of the jaws. The pin d is provided with two holes 2 to receive a staple f, which is used to secure the pin to the fence-wire after the latter is twisted.

"When the wire of a fence is found to be slack, it is taken between the jaws of the tongs and the pin d is placed between said jaws with the ends of the pin in the sockets c. The tongs are drawn, bringing the pin against the wire, and the latter is twisted,the rollers B bearing against the wire and being turned in the operation, so that they serve as guides for the wire and facilitate the operation. A loop is thus formed in the wire which is tight around the pin d, and the latter is secured by means of a staple s, which is passed over the wire and through the holes 9 in the pin. A number of the pins d may thus be applied to one length of wire, if necessary, for

taking up the slack.

The ti ghtener, adjusted as shown, being the subject of another application for patent to bc filed by me, is not claimed in this application.

I claim- 1. A pair of tongs for applying tighteners to slack wire, provided with rollers projecting beyond the ends of the jaw, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, with tongs, for thepurpose set forth, having sockets in their jaws adapted to receive a wire-tightener,ot' rollers journaled to said jaws and projecting beyond the ends thereof, substantially as described.

3. The combination, with a pair of tongs, for the purpose described, of rollers jour'naled thereto and provided with a beveled periphery, substantially as described.
