Description

(No Model.)
H. H. JAMES.
COMBINED MILKING STOOL AND SALT-BOX.
WITNESSES 9? 0% UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARVEY H. JAMES, OF OTTAlVA, KANSAS.
COMBINED MlLKlNG-STOOL AND SALT-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 435,585, dated September 2, 1890.
$eria1No. 349,065. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HARVEY H. JAMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ottawa, in the county of Franklin and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Milking- Stools and Salt-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention consists in a new and improved combined milking-stool, salt-box, and pail-rest, which is of the greatest practical convenience to all farmers and dairymen, and which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is acentral longitudinal vertical sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the carrier-frame.
The same letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Referring to the several parts by letter, A indicates the rectangular box, which forms both the salt-box and milking-stool, this box being made, preferably, about twelve by ten inches, and six inches deep. This box is supported on four diverging legs B, similar to the ordinary legs of milkstools.
The box A forms the salt-box, and the salt is placed within it, while its top is closed by a lid A, which forms both the lid or cover of the salt-box and the seat of the stool, as will be seen. This combined lid and seat may be held in place by two hooks O O, which are secured by eyes 0 to the sides of the box and hook into eyes D screwed into the sides or edges of the lid. Any desired or suitable means of holding the lid in position may be employed in place of the hooks and eyes, to which I do not of course confine myself.
The bottom of the box is extended at one end to form a rest or support E for the milking-pail, which sets on this rest, and is thus held up in a convenient position out of the dirt and mud. A rim F is secured around the edge of the rest, and extends up, as shown, B
and this rim will prevent the bucket from slipping off into the mud or dirt and spilling the milk which may be contained in it. The pail-rest E is usually about twenty-four inches long the stool being eighteen inches high.
To the sides of the box, at the points shown, are secured the lower ends of two straps G G. The upper ends of these straps buckle into buckles H at the lower corners of a frame I, which is formed of a single heavy wire curved to form hooks or loops J J at its upper corners, adapted to pass over the shoulders, the lower corners of the frame being bent into loops or hooks K K, which fit around the central cross-bars of the buckles II. It will be seen that by this arrangement when it is desired to lift and carry the stool when moving from one cow to another it can be readily and conveniently done by putting the books at the upper corner of the frame over the shoulders, when the stool is easily lifted and carried to any point desired.
The front end of the box is formed with an opening L, which furnishes a convenient hand-hold for lifting the box when it is not desired to use the shoulder straps and hooks.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and advantages of my invention will be readily understood. It will be seen that my new and improved combined milking-stool, salt-box, and pail-rest is strong and comparatively simple in construction, while it is exceedingly convenient and practical in use, effecting a considerable saving in time and labor.
Having thus described my invention,what
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the box having the supporting-legs, forming a combined salt-receptacle and stool, and having the hooks C
