VERGEWIRE FOR CLOCKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 438,355, dated October 14, 1890.

Be it known that 1, JAMES MONROE MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vacaville, Solano county, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Adjustable Vergeires for Clocks; and I hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to clocks, and especially to the verge-wires thereof.
It consists in the novel adjustable vergewire and the means for adjusting it, hereinafter fully described, and specificallypointed out in the claims.
The object of my invention is to provide a means for readily putting the clock in beat, whether on a level shelf or not.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure 1 is a face view of a clock mechanism, showing the application of my adj ustable verge-wire and the lever for adjustingit. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the verge-wire and lever.
A is the clock-casing, having within it suitable clock mechanism, represented generally by B.

D is the verge, the pallets or ends d of which engage its teeth.
E is the pendulum, and e is the pendulumwire.
The verge-wirc in common use consists of a single piece, the upper end of which is attached to the verge and the lower end is looped upon the pendulum-wire. In order to put the clock in beat, it is necessary to adjust this wire, which is usually done by bending it; but this is an operation which, on account of the difliculty of gaining access to the clock mechanism, is not generally resorted to by the owner, and instead of it he seeks to set the clock on a level or in such position that it will return to beat; but with my device he can readily put it in beat, whether on a level or not.
My verge-wire, instead of being a single piece, is formed in two sections jointed together. The upper section is designated by g and the lower by g. The uppersection is connected with the verge, and the lower sec tion is connected with the pendulum-wire. The two sections are jointed together in any suitable manner, as by means of a hook g on the upper section passing through a suitable elongated eye g in the lower section, whereby the proper movement of the two sections is permitted.
His a bracket which is secured to the frame of the clock mechanism. To the inner end of this bracket is pivoted at z the adj usting-lever 1, of a length sufiicient to allow its lower end to be readily reached, whereby it can be operated. The upper end of the lever extends beyond its pivotal point, and carries a pivotpin i, on which the lower section g of the verge-wire is pivoted. Now it will be seen when the clock is out of beat that by turning the lever I to one side or the other, as may be needed, the fulcrum of the verge wire is shifted, thereby changing slightly the position of the verge-wire sections and conforming them to the position and throw of the pendulunrwire, while keeping the verge itself in proper position to be operated by the scapewheel. The parts of my device being carried by the bracket H provide for its ready application to any clock.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The jointed verge-wire having a movable fulcrum and a lever for shifting said fulcrum, substantially as herein described.
2. The combination of the jointed vergewire, the pivoted lever, and the pin carried by the lever, and on which the verge-wire is pivoted, substantially as herein described.
3. The combination of the bracket, the lever pivoted thereto and having the pin, and the jointed verge-wire pivoted on said pin, substantially as herein described.
