SANDING DEVICE FOR CARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 438,568, dated October 14, 1890.
Application filed March 17, 1890.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM F. MOOREADY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Homewood, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanders; and I do hereby declare the following to'be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved sanding device for velocipede railway-oars; and it consists in certain details of construction, as will be fully set forth hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawingI have shown a side sectional elevation of my improvement attached to a velocipede-car.
To put my invention into practice I provide a cylindrical box at, having a contracted mouth I), which projects downwardand in close contact with the rail c of the track. This box a is placed in an inclined position forward of the driving-wheel d, and secured by suitable braces e. Arranged within the box a is a Valve f, actuated by a spring g, placed about the stem h, and held in position bya suitable bearing '6. Attached to this stem h is a flexible cord k, which is arranged over suitablyplaced sheaves Zland connected to the brakelever m. The brake-lever m is provided with a locking device 0, which engages with asegmental rack 19, and has a surplus movement to operate the sander without interfering with the movement of the brake.
In operation the lever m is drawn back to sand the track and forward to set the brake. The backward movement lifts the valve J from its seat, and may beheld in different position to regulate the flow of sand.
Having thus described my invention,- I claim- In a sanding device for velocipede-cars, the sand-box a, having a contracted mouth in close contact with the rail, the valve f, spring g, and rod h, and connected to the brake-lever m, substantially as described.
