Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GERHARD MENNEN, OF NEVARK, NEW JERSEY.
POWDER-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 441,802, dated December 2, 1890.
Application filed March 1, 1890. Serial No. 342,242. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GERHARD MENNEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Powder-Boxes and I dohereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a powder-box of greater neatness and durability of construction and of greater convenience when in service; and it consists in the improved powder-box and in the arrangements and combinations of parts thereof, substantially as will be hereinafter set forth, and finally embodied in the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters indicate corresponding parts in each of the figures, Figure 1 is an elevation of the boX. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same on. line at, and Fig. 3 is a particular form of construction, which under some circumstances I prefer to employ.
In said drawings, a indicates the body of the sheet-metal box, which provides a receptacle for the powder. At the open end or mouth of the box the same is provided with shoulders b c, which are formed of sheet metal by pressure of rolls, dies, or other appropriate tools, against which shoulders the sprinklingcap f and cover 9 are made to bear, the said mouth being also provided with bearings d e, on which the said cap and cover are secured by frictional contact.
it, over onto said cap, so as to prevent with drawal, as will be understood upon reference to Fig. 3. By this means thebox can be readily replenished and be used repeatedly after the first contents are exhausted.
The sifting-cap has its perforated face extended above the edge of the body of the box, so that it may be brought into contact with the cover or with a thin sheet of wadding w interposed between said sifting-cap and cover, and thus in transportation the powder cannot sift through and lie on the upper face of the sifting-cap, and thus present an unsightly appearance and be the occasion of some loss when the box is first opened.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the box-body a, having shoulders I) and 0, formed one above the other near the edge of said box,a sifting-cap engaging one of said shoulders and extending to or above the edge of said box, and a cover adapted to engage the other said shoulder and to inclosc said sifting-cap, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 14th day of January, 1890.
GERIIARD MENNEN.
