UNITED STATES PATENT GFFICE.
JOHANN FEY, OF ITZEIIOE, GERMANY.
LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 451,709, dated May 5, 1891.
Application filed October 9, 1890. Serial No. 367,610. (No model.) Patented in Germany February 1, 1889, No. 48,765
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHANN FEY, a subject of the King of Prussia, and residing at Itzehoe, Kingdom of Prussia, in the German Empire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door-Locks, for which I have obtained Letters Patent No. 48,7 65 in the German Empire on the 1st day of February, 1889,)
. and combination of parts and details, which will be fully described hereinafter, and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figurel is a representation of my improved lock, the face-plate being removed and the parts being in the position that they have when the latchbolts are locked in place. Fig. II is a similar view showing the positions of the parts when the latch-bolts are unlocked, thus adapting the door to be opened; and Fig. III is a vertical transverse sectional view on the line as m, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The two latch-bolts A and B, which are in general of the usual construction, are each provided with an extension f, provided with a longitudinal slot f into which a lug e projects from the plate 0, the outer ends of said latch bolts passing through apertures in the end plates D. A spiral spring cl is secured to each latch-bolt and to the casing and serves for the purpose of pulling the latchbolts outward. The spindle-rose a is provided with a square aperture 0,, through which the spindle can be passed. The rose is provided with an upwardly-projecting arm I), having a rounded head which enters a notch in'the bottom of the upper latch-bolt A. The said rose is also provided with a downwardly-projecting arm 5', adapted to act on the upper arm a of a lever 0' c pivoted to the plate 0, the lower end of the arm 0 and of the lever c 0 being provided with a rounded head that passes into a notch in the upper edge of the latch-bolt B. provided with two locking-bolts E and F, adapted to slide on the plate 0 at right angles to the latch-bolts A and B in such a manner that the inner ends of said latch-bolts A and B can abut against said lock-bolts E and F. The upper lock-bolt E is provided with a recess q, extending upward from the bottom edge of the same. In one edge of each recess a series of notches r are formed for receiving projections s on the inner face of a tumbler G, mounted to swing on a pin p, that passes through the recess q of the sliding lock-bolt E. A spring 15 is connected With the tumbler G and presses the same in the direction toward the key-hole g, in which the key g can be inserted. The upper locking-boltE is provided with a notch it, into which the bit of the key can pass, part of which notch h is overlapped by the tumbler G. The bottom locking-boltF is provided with a longitudinal slot a, into which a lug 0 projects from the plate 0 for the purpose of guiding said bottom bolt. A lever 11 t is pivoted at i on the plate 0, and is provided at its ends with longitudinal slotsl Z, into which pins project from the lower end of the lockiug-bolt c and the upper end of the partmof the locking-bolt F.
The operation is as follows: When the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 2 and the spindle is turned, the latch-boltsAB are withdrawn and the parts brought into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig.2. The door can now be opened and closed in the ordinary manner by turning the knob-spindle. When it is desired to lock the parts, the key is inserted and turned, whereupon the bit of the key, acting on the edge of the tumbler The latch is G, presses said tumbler in the direction from the key-hole in such a manner as to disengage the projection s on the tumbler from the notches r on the locking-bolt E, thus permitting the bit of the key which acts on one edge of the notch h to press said lock-bolt E upward and bring it 'in such a manner that its side edge abuts against the inner end of the upper latch-bolt A. By means of the lever c" 11 the lower locking-bolt F is moved downward and in such position that its side edge abuts against the end of the bottom latch-bolt B, thus locking both latch-bolts in place and preventing their being withdrawn by the turning of the knob-spindle. WVhenever it is desired to unlock the latch-bolts it is only necessary to turn the key in the reverse direction, whereby the locking-bolts E and F casing, of two latch-bolts and two lockingbolt's adapted to slide at right angles with the latch-bolts and to engage the same, one of the lock-bolts having notches, an additional tumbler also having notches and adapted to engage the notched lock-bolt, which notched lock-bolt also has a recess for the key-bit, and a pivoted lever, the opposite ends of which are connected with the two lock-bolts, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two Witnesses.
