UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC M. LEVY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF THREE-FOUR'IHS TO HERMANN RENDTORFF, OF SAME PLACE.
HAND-RUBBER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 458,468, dated August 25, 1891.
Application filed February 24, 1891.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC M. LEVY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the count-y of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand-Washers, of which the following is a speciiication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to hand washers or rubbers adapted to be used in washing, so as to save the hands from the rough usage incident to washing.
rihe objects 'of the invention are to provide a device of this character that can be used without injury to the clothing, to provide a hand-washer that will act in an ecient manner, producing as near as possible the action of the knuckles in washing, and to provide a device of this kind of simple, durable, and inexpensive construction.
The invention consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective view of a hand washer or rubber constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view.
In accordance with the principle involved by my invention I provide a suitable block or frame that can be conveniently grasped or held and along two edges of said block arrange projecting iianges or edges. A series of flexible strands or cords of fibrous or analogous material is supported by said anges or edges and extends across the immediate space between the same. It will thus be seen that said strandsor cords rest only upon the flanges or edges, so that their immediate portions are capable of a limited movement relative to the pressure to which they are subjected. In rubbing clothing on a wash-board it is obvious that said cords or strands will yield, so that the rubbing action Serial No. 382,598. (No model.)
will partake somewhat with the action ot rubbing with the knuckles.
The particular construction of my device is as follows: A block A is provided near its 5o rear face with side grooves l to permit said block to be firmly grasped or held by the hand. The front face of the block is recessed longitudinally, as at 2, to provide side flanges or edges 3. A series of perforations 4. and 5 is 5 5 made in the flanges 3, and the cord or strand B is strung through said perforations and from one flange 3 to the other in an obvious manner, as shown. The end of said cord or strand is secured at its end to the block in 5o any suitable manner. The perforations et alternate with the perforations 5, and said se ries of perforations are located on different lines, so as not to weaken the flanges 3. The edges 6 of said anges 3, upon which the rope 65 rests, are preferably beveled to permit the greater Iiexure of the strands or cords resting thereon.
It will be understood, of course, that .eX- cept in the claims for the specific con- 7o struction I contemplate supporting the crossstrands b of the strand B upon any suitable devices, so as to have them supported at their ends only, that their intermediate portions will possess the desired exibility before referred to, by means of which the easy and efficient rubbing action is obtained.
I claim as my inventionv A hand washer or rubber comprising a block having side iianges and a cord or strand 8o strung through perforations in said anges and from one to the other of said flanges to forma series of cords or strands extending between said flanges and providinga flexible rubbing-surface.
In testimony whereof I aiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ISAAC M. LEVY.
