To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OZELLO R. HUNT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Bottoms of Springs, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates particularly to re-enforcing springs designed to support the middle portion of woven-wire mattresses. As is well known, the unsupported middle portions of such bed-bottoms yield more freely to a weight upon the bed than the marginal portions, and especially is this true of woven wire mattresses that have been much used; and it'is the object of my present improvements to provide reenforcing spring devices adapted to support the weaker portions of the mattress. This object is accomplished by the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan View of an inverted bedbottom provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same in position for use, and Fig. 3 is a plan view showing a portion of the devices in a detail view for the purpose of illustrating the means for tightening the spring-supports.

In said drawings, 1 designates an ordinary woven-wire mattress, and 2 its support-ingframe. In rows transverse to the bed-bottom, and at either side of its median line, are spiral or helical springs 3, having their upper ends bearing against the under side of the mattress and their lower ends attached to bars 4, which extend across the bed-bottom beneath the springs 3. These bars are shorter than the width of the frame 2, so that their ends are free to move between the side rails of the frame. Through these bars are extended wires 5, which have their ends se-' cured to the end rails of the frame, and which may be provided with springs 6 for rendering them more yielding and elastic. These wires are passed through holes 7 in the bars 4, and, instead of running in straight lines, are crossed between the bars from a hole in one bar to the next hole of the series in the opposite bars, so that their courses are diagonal and crossed in pairs between the bars. By this arrangement the wires can be tightened by moving the bars toward each other and slackened by moving the bars apart.

Rods 8, having threaded ends and provided with nuts 9, are used to secure the bars in the desired position of adjustment. In use, as will be apparent, when it is desired to make the support for the middle portion of the mattress more firm the bars are pushed closer together, thus'diminishing the angles of the crossed wires and so making them more taut, and the bars are then held in position by the rods and nuts. In place of these rods wires may be used and secured in any convenient manner when the bars are moved r to different positions of adjustment.

The re-enforcing devices are thus firmly secured together and connected to the mattress in a manner that enables them, while serving to strengthen the weaker portions of the mat-tress, to yield to the desired degree to its movements.

Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,

1. An adj ustablc support for a woven-wire mattress, comprising a series of wires having their ends secured to the mattress-frame and their middle portions crossed, in combination with cross-bars adapted to slide on the-wires and carrying re-en forcing springs, and means for varying the distance between said bars for adjusting the tension of the wires, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, with a woven-wire mattress and its frame, of adjustable transverse bars carrying springs for re-enforcing the mattress, crossed wires attached to the mattress-frame on which wires said bars are adjustably supported, and means for varying the distance between said bars for adjusting the tension of the wires, substantially as set forth. I

3. An adjustable support for abed-bottom, comprising crossed wires and bars carrying 5 re-enforcing springs arranged to be adjusted on .the wires to vary their tension, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
