Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OYRUS W. SALADEE, OF PUTNAM, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN STIRRUPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 46,7 l l, dated March 7, 1865.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GYRUs W. SALADEE, of Putnam, Muskingum county, and State of O iio, have invented anew and improved mode of fastening the top end of guards to stirrups for riding-saddles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the acc )mpanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of this invention consists in the peculiar fastening of the top end of the guard to a cross-bar secured iu the top of the stirrup.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and application.
O is a cross-bar, made of iron or other suitable material, and passed through the stirrup immediately under the stirrup-strap E and there made secure, by riveting or otherwise, on each side of thc stirrup A, as shown at F F. To this cross bar C the top end of the guard B is rigidly fastened. This fastening may be effected in either of the following ways--vizz First, a hole or slot can be made through the center of the cross-bar C and the end of the guard tted into it and riveted on the opposite side, or, in lieu of riveting, a screw and nut may be used; second, the upper end o the-guard B may be laid on the top or bottom side of the cross-bar C and secured in its position by passing a screw or rivet through both; third, another mode of making this connection between the guard B and the cross-bar C, and which I now think is the best way of doing it, is to bend the end of the guard around the cross-bar C, as shown in the drawing, and
by which the connection is made without a hole through either; fourth, in case it is desirable to stamp the guard out of a solid plate of metal, or to cast the saine malleable and afterward bend into the desired form or shape, this cross-bar C may be cast or stamped solid with the guard.
Having thus fully described the nature of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The cross-bar C, in combination with the guard B and the stirrup A, in the manner and for the purpose substantially as shown and described.
CYRUS W. SALADEE.
