UNITE STATES' PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE KV. GORSUCH, OF MARTINSBURG, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-IIALF TO M. B. MILLER, OF CARLISLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
PIPE WRENCH AND CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 468,601, dated February 9, 1892u Application filed October 31, 1891. Serial No. 410,419. (No model.)
.To aZZ whom''t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE XV. GORSUOH, a citizen of the-United States, residing at Martinsburg, in the county of Blair and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Pipe WVrench and Cutter; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in ro the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the acconpanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
I 5 My invention is an improved pipe wrench and cutter; and the leading Object of my in- Vention is the provision of a conbined tool of this character which will perform its functions in a perfect manner. V
Another Object of my invention is the provision of a combined tool which can be quickly and easily adjusted to pipes of different sizes and which will. withstand the strain.
Another Object of my invention is the provision of a combined tool of the character named which will be superior to tools of like kind in points of simplicity, durability, and inexpensiveness, in order that the tool may commend itself as thoroughly useful and 0 practical.
To attain the desired obj ects the inVention consists of a combined pipe wrench and cutter constructed substantially as herein illustrated, described, and specifically defined and distinguished by the claims.
Figure 1 represents a erspective view of the tool when performing its functions as a pipe-wrench. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of the tool as it appears when employed 0 as a cutter. Fig. 3 represents a Vertical sectional view of the tool.
In said drawings, A designates the handle of my wrench, which on* one side is formed with teeth B, forning a rack, and at the up- 5 per end is formed with the inclined toothed jaw C, forming the lower rigid jaw of the wrench, which rigid jaw is bifurcated, as
shown.
- The movable or adjustable jaw D is made 5o in the form of a hook, and at the'lower end is pivoted in the bifurcated end of the adjusting-loop E, having the inclined edge for engaging the teeth of the rack for retanng the said loop, and consequently the movable jaw, at any desired adj ustment with reference 5 5 to the lower jaw, and the loop is further provided with the depending lug G, through which passes the screw I-I, which engages the handle and prevents the loop from slipping. From this construction it will be seen that to use the device as a pi pe-wrench it is only necessary to adjust the loop on the handle, which consequently adjusts the movable jaw to the size of the pipe, and the screw carried by the loop holds the movable jaw rigid and the tool can be operated to turn the pipe with case.
In the bifurcation of the rigid jaw of the wrench I mount on the stud J the disk or cutting-wheel K, and to the outer ends of the stud I pivot the ends of the bail L, in the closed outer end of which is the adjustingscrew M, adapted to engage the movable JtW. This construction is employed when the tool is used as a pipe-cutter, and the movable jaw is adjusted to the pipe which is to be cut, and after being adjusted properly the bail having the screw is used to secure the movable jaw, and as the handle is turned and the cutter enters the pipe the screw in the bail is adjusted, and thereby the cutter is retained firmly to the pipe and an easy and rapid cutting of the pipe is insured.
From the foregoing it is evident thatI provide a tool which can be used either as a pipewrench or pipe-cutter and that both functions are performed in a perfect manner, whereby a single tool at the price of either tool will pei-form both purposes in a thorough manner.
It is also evident that the tool can be quickly changed from a pipe-wrench .to a pipe-cutter, or Vice versa, is of convenient form, simple and durable in construction, and can be produced at a small price.
I clain as my invention- 1. The herein-described tool, consisting of ahandle having a jaw, a movable book-shaped jaw, and aloop encircling the handle and connected to the jaw, having means for securing the movable jaw at any desired point with reference to the rigid jaw. 'roo 2. The herein-described tool, consisting of a handle having a jaw,a novable jaw, a loop on the handle conneoted With the movable jaw, and a sorew carried by the loop for engaging the handle and securing the novable aW.
3. The herein-described tool consisting of the handle having a jaw and forned With a rack, a loop on the jaw engaging the rack, a novable jaW connected to the loop, and a screw carried by the loop' for engaging the handle to secure the jaw.
4. The herein-deseribed tool, consisting of the handle, the movable jaw, the cutter carried by the handle, and the bail having the adjusting-screw,al1 adapted to serve in the nanner and for the purpose stated.
5. The herein-described tool, consisting of the handle, the cutter carried by the handle, 'the movable jaw, the adjusting loop connected to the movable jaw, and the bail having the screw for engaging the said movable an'.
In testimony whereof I affix In'y signature in presence of two Witnesses.
GEORGE W. GORSUCH.
