KNITTING-MACHINE NEEDLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 473,697, dated April 26, 1892.

Be it known that I, JOHN G. EGLY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Knitting-Machine Needles, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

My invention consists in constructing the hook or head of the needle with a top bevel, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

Figures 1 and 2 represent side elevations of knitting-machine needles embodying my invention, the same being in different positions. Fig. 3 represents a side elevation of a portion of a needle as heretofore constructed.

Similar letters and numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

Referring to the drawings, A designates a knitting-machine latch-needle having a hook or head 13 formed with a substantially vertically-depending part 1 and the upper portion 2, the latter extending obliquely or diagonally from the top or abrupt bend of the part 1 to the upper end of the straight body 3 of the needle. The said part 1 and a portion of the oblique upper portion 2 are outside or to one side of the line of the latch side of the body of the needle. By the construction of the head as set forth an abrupt angular bend is formed in the hook or head of the needle, as fully shown. It will be seen that as the work or fabric is formed and the needle rises the oblique portion 2 thereof rides freely against and in front of the work or stitch which has been pre- Serial No. 313,741- (No model.)

viously formed, thereby avoiding elevation or raising of the work, which has heretofore been the defect in operation of the needle shown in Fig. 3.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The knitting-needle A, having the hook B, with an oblique or slanting portion extending from the curve at the upper endof the depending portion of said hook to the upper end of its body, the said depending portion of the hook and a portion of the oblique or slanting part being outside of the line of the latch sideof the body of the needle, substantially as described.

2. A needle for knitting-machines, having an angular head formed by the depending part 1 and the oblique portion 2, extending from the bend of said depending part to the body or shank of the needle, substantially as described.

3. A knitting-machine needle having a head with an abrupt angular bend therein, substantially as described.

4. A knitting-machine needle having a head with a substantially vertically-depending part and an oblique portion extending from the upper termination of said depending part to the body or shank of the needle, to thereby form an abrupt angular bend in said head, substantially as described.
