Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY J. ECKER AND GEORGE F. EOKER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMPOSITION OF MATTER FOR CLEANING BROVVNSTONE, 84C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 483,143, dated September 2'7, 1892. Application filed May 5, 1892- Serial No. 431,871. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, HENRY J. EOKER and GEORGE F. EOKER, both citizens of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Composition of Matter to be Used for the Purpose of Cleaning Brownstone or for other Analogous Purposes, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention consists, essentially, of the combination of pulverized quartz and oxide of iron; and it is intended to be used as a powder in cleaning brownstone in the same manner as marble-dust is now used in cleaning white-marble steps of buildings.
The colored quartz for cleaning brownstone, consisting of pulverized quartz and oxide of iron, as a separate article of commerce is intended to be the subject-matter of this application.
VVe prefer to combine the pulverized quartz and oxide of iron in about the proportions of one part of oxide to seven parts, by weight, of quartz; and we prefer as an article of commerce to combine them dry, though in use they would be mixed with water.
Brownstone steps and fronts of buildings are discolored from various causes, notably by a green fungus, which thrives on their porous surface, and in scouring them with sand or quartz soap a white or chalky residuum is left which is very unsightly. The object of our invention is to color this residual quartz, so that it shall be invisible, and we have found by experiment that oxide of iron, which may be procured in the required different shades of color, has the necessary attributes of coloring the quartz thoroughly and adhering to it firmly, so that it cannot be washed away.
Our composition can also be used to restore red bricks which have have been discolored by marble-dust, &c accidentally left on them when washing the white-marble trimmings of houses, and this without danger of staining the white marble.
Having thus fully described our invention and the best method known to us of applying the same, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A com position of matter to be used for scou ring brownstone or like substances, consisting of pulverized quartz and oxide of iron in about the proportions specified.
HENRY J. EOKER. GEORGE F. EOKER.
