UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HERMANN GREEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO HERTZ & GREEN, OF SAME PLACE.
LOOP-FASTENER.
SPECXFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 483,672?, dated October 4, 1892.
Application led October 20, 1891. Serial Nn. 409,263. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, HERMANN GREEN, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Loop-Fasteners for Clothing; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to devices for supporting garments, and has for its object to provide a device wherebyboth a loop and a button, which are often used together, particularly on boys pants, may be secured to a garment by a single fastening device, by which both shall be held securely and withoutdanger of injury to the loop.
In the drawings, Figure l is an elevation of the loop and fastener applied to a piece of fabric, the head of a button being indicated in dotted lines. Fig. 2isasection on the line x of Fig. l.
A rivet A has a shankB of suitable length to pass through the fabric and to receive on the outer end a burr C and to be Swaged down to be permanently secured to the garment. The head D of the rivet may be of any suitable shape and size. The burr C is grooved or formed Wit-l1 au overturned edge E to hold the loop F firmly in place and to prevent the crushing of the loop when, the shank of the rivet is swaged down. The loop being made usually of elastic cord the crushing of the loop would cause the loop to break, and the saine result would be produced if the overturned edge of the burr were forced down upon the loop. Consequently I have fiattened out or slotted the overturned edge of the burr for a portion of its circumference slightly in excess of the width of the loop at that point, as at a b.
Were the loop alone to be used the device already described would be suiicient; but in many cases both buttons and loops are desirable and necessary to be attached to the same garment. My present purpose is, therefore, to provide a single improved fastening for both. l therefore combine a button with the shank of the rivet, so that both the button and the loop are held in place by the same rivet. As the rivet is in practice usually madewith a tubular sl1ank,Iprovide the button Gwith a shank g,which may pass through the rivet and have its inner end swaged down. A shoulder g is formed on the button-shank to hold the button in proper position.
I claim as my invention- The combination of a loop, a rivet, a burr therefor formed with an overturned edge adapted to receive and cover said loop, said overturned edgebeing flattened or slotted for a portion of its circumference to prevent cutting the outwardly-extending portion of the loop, and a button fixed to the shank of said rivet, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HERMANN GREEN.
