Land-Marker No. 48,551. Y Patented J1i1y4, 1865.

NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM GOLTRY, OF LA GRANGE, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FIELD-MARKERS FOR PLANTING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 48,551, dated July 4, 1865.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM GOLTRY, .of La Grange, in the county of Lucasand State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Field-Marker; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip tlon thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forining a partof this specithe drawings.
The nature of my invention consists in the novel combination of a series of marking-runners with a fixed bar and an operating handle or lever, for the purpose of controlling and changing with facility their direction. These markers or runners A A A are made of wood or metal, of about the form illustrated by Fig. 4 of the drawings. They are placed parallel to each other, with their straight edges uppermost, and at such equal distances apart as is deemed advisable, and are supported in this upright position by means of a transverse bar, B, resting upon their upper edges, near the rear end thereof. Each is pivoted and secured to this stay-bar B by means of a screw, 0, whose shank passes loosely through the bar, but is secured in the runner, as in Fig. 3. The front ends of the upper edges of the runners A A are also all connected together by means ofa second transverse bar, 0, somewhat lighter than the stay-bar B, and to which they are each pivoted by means of screw-pivots c c, in the same manner and to the same bar, B.
Upon the upper side of thestay-bar B, at the center thereof, is pivoted a lever or handle, D, having for conveniencetwo arms, (1 cl, as seen ill Figs. 1 and 2. The front end of this lever Dprojects forward to the connecting-bar (l and passes under a bridle-piece, E, by which it is confined, so that if the long arms of the lever I be turned'to one side or the other this short end or arm will force the transverse bar 0 in the opposite direction, and with it the forward ends of the whole series of markers A A, as illustrated by Fig. 2 of the drawings. Thus the direction of the markersis readily governed by means of the lever D, while the draft of the machine is not materially increased.
The machine is drawn by means of a pole or tongue, G, secured to the stay-bar B by the hounds g y, in the usual manner. In one-horse machines shafts are substituted for the pole G by being secured to the bar B in the same manner.
I contemplate the arrangement of a drivers seat upon the bar B, in which case the lever D must be inclined or curved sufficiently to be within reach of the operators hand, or it may be constructed of such aform as to be operated by his foot.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of two or more runners or markers. A A, with each other and with the connecting-bars B and O by means of pivotpinso a, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. In combination with thepivoted markers A A and connecting-levers B O, the lever D, pivoted to the bar B, and operating substantially as herein described.
The foregoing specification of my improved marker signed by me this 20th day of April, A. D. 1865.
