Description

(No Model.)
0. F, GARRETSON. DENTAL ARTIOULATOR.
No. 497,122. Patented May 9, 1893.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES F. GARRETSON, OF KNOXVILLE, IOWA.
DENTAL ARTICULATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 497,122, dated May 9, 1893. Application filed January 26, 1893. Serial No. 459,858. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLEs F. GARBETSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Knoxville,in the county of Marion and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dental Apparatus for Obtaining the Bite; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has for its object to provide a simple and effective device or apparatus designed for use in dentistry in obtaining what is professionally termed in the art as the bite so that the sets of teeth when completed and in use, will meet each other properly when the lower jaw is closed. In order to attain this purpose, it is necessary to prevent the lowerjaw from being projected forward out of its natural position while taking impression plates for the teeth, and to this end the invention consists in a de vice constructed substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of my improved device or apparatus; Fig. 2 a detail view showing a modification thereof.
In the accompanying drawings A represents suitable spring-arms which maybe constructed of steel or other spring metal, or a material that will possess the required elasticity or springy nature may be used with the same object in view. The arms may be made from a single piece of material or may be formed separate as found most desirable.
To the arms A is adjustably connected a suitable chin-pad B by means of a notched or toothed bar a which passes through a slot and is held in its adjusted position by means of a suitable pawl b engaging with the teeth on the bar, or by any other means found best adapted to the purpose.
I do not wish to be understood as confining myself to any special form of chin-pad or the means shown for holding the same in its adjusted position, as any device that will form a pad for the chin for asimilar purpose would attain the end desired, andIreserve the right to make any such changes in the construction of the device or modifications, as would be considered as coming within the scope of rubber, or any other suitable material found best adapted to the purpose. After the apparatus or device is connected to the head by the tips entering the ears, the chin-pad is adjusted so as to hold the lower jaw to its natural position and then held stationary by the pawl or other means employed for the purpose.
In place of making the chin-pad adjustable, the arms A may be constructed so as to be extensible as shown in Fig. 2. To attain this end, one of many well known means is employed, in the present instance, the extremity of the arms being formed round in place of flat, as in Fig. 1, and fitting over it is a tubular extension or section 0 which is heldin its adjusted or extended position by means of a set screw d passing through a slot in the section. Any means may be employed for rendering the arms extensible, as the means shown is one of many forms that may be used.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by 'Letters Patent, is-
1. A dental apparatus or device for obtaining the bite, consisting of suitable springarms for the head and a pad for supporting the chin, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A dental apparatus or device for obtaining the bite, consisting of suitable arms for the head having ear-tips, and a pad for the chin, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. A dental apparatus or device for obtaining the bite, consisting of extensible arms for the head and a pad for supporting the chin, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the aboveI have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES F. GARRETSON.
