REGULATOR FOR` FU RNACES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,535, dated May 30, 1893.

T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. DIXON, a citizen of the Kingdom of Great Britain and Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Regulators for Furnaces, of which the following is a specication.
A regulator of the class to which the presf ent invention relates, comprises a flexible diaphragm, a casing for said diaphragm, a plunv ger resting upon the top side ofthe diaphragm and passing'ont through a hole in the casing, a weighted lever pivotally connected to said plunger, and a suitable connection between the lever and the damper of the furnace. Upon the side of the diaphragm opposite the plunger, the casing is in internal communication with the boiler, so that the pressure in the casing is the saine as the pressure in the boiler.
The objects of the present invention are to improve the construction of the diaphragm and casing so as to make the diaphragm more durable, and to improve the manner of fulcruming the lever so as to increase the adj nstability of regulator, and to these ends the invention consists in certain features of novelty that are particularly pointed out in the claims hereinafter. n
In the accompanying drawings, which are madea part of this speciication,-Figure l is a side elevation of the improved regulator and parts of its connections with the furnace and boiler. Fig. 2 is a vertical'section thereof on a larger scale.
'The casing is formed of two concavo-convex disks A and A', placed with their concave faces together and secured by bolts situated near their margins.
Bis the diaphragm, consisting of a concavoconvex disk of rubber or other suitable material, the margin of which is clamped between the margins of the disks A, A. Through the disk A is an opening C, surrounded by an annular flange, through which the casing and boiler (not. shown) are placed in internal communication by a pipe D. Through the disk A is a similar opening C', surrounded by an annular flange, through which passes the plunger E, the enlarged headE of whichA Serial No. 424,221. (No model.)

The plunger is preferably formed in two parts, i. c. a hollow stem e that carries the head E', and a stem e that fits inside of and projects from the hollow stem e, and is notched at its upper end for the reception of the lever F, and perforated for the passage of a bolt or pin f by which the plunger and lever are pivotally connected. This lever is fnlcrumed upon one side of its point of connection with the plunger and on the other side of said point it is provided with an adjustable weight G, and connected to one end of a chain H which passes overa pulleyIand has its other end connected to the damper of the furnace.
It will be understood that the weight is placed at such position that when the desired maximum boiler pressure is reached, the pressure which the weight exerts on the upper side of the diaphragm will be exceeded by the steam pressure on the under side of the diaphragm, whereby thelatter is forced upward a greater or less distance-possibly to the position indicated by dotted lines-and the furnace damper moved a proportionatev distance in the direction that will cause it to retard the draft through the fire-box. The fire is thereby checked, and as the pressure in the boiler decreases the weight G will move the parts back, and will vhave restored them to normal positions when the boiler pressure same time provide for the necessary adj ustment, I make the fulcrum ot' the lever adjustable, by the mechanism now to be described or any equivalent arrangement. J is a radial Harige on the top of the casing, having, at different distances from the center of the casing, perforations j for the reception Ibo of a bolt or pin passed through the lower end of a post K, the upper end of which is similarly perforated Jfor the passage of a bolt or pin which may be passed through any one of a number ot' perforaiions f formed through the lever at different distances from the plunger. This constitutes a very simple, cheap, and effective means for adjusting ythe fulcrum.
0 A necessary result of changing the fulcrurn 1s a variation in the relative efficiency of the steam and Weight acting on opposite sides of the diaphragm, but this may be compensated for by properly adjusting the-weight. When the weight has been placed at the extremity of the lever and a still greater pressure on the top side of the diaphragm is desired, its efficiency may be still further increased by moving the fulcrum closerto the point of connection between the lever and plunger, and the opposite result may be had by reversing these conditions.
The diaphragm is made without an angle at the Juncture of its concavo-convex portion and margin. This idea may be carried out by making the diaphragm of eom'pou nd curve, or double ogee shape in cross section as shown by Fig. 2, thus avoiding the formation of an angle at any part. When this diaphragm is reversed it will be exactly the same shape as When in normal condition, 7l. e. Without an angle or a sharp bend. The diaphragm is preferably of rubber molded in the form described.
' To still further aid in the carrying out of this idea, the inner surfaces of the disksA and A are provided with concavities corresponding in shape and size to the shape and sizeof the disk A. With this arrangement, when the diaphragm is in normal condition its entire curved portion Will have a bearing against Vthe inner surface of the disk A, and when it is completely reversed it Will bear similarly against the inner surface of the disk A and the head E', thereby avoiding all possibility of its being bent at any part over a sharp angle or corner.
If desired the pulley I may be dispensed with and the chain H, or other suitable connection, carried directly from the lever to the damper.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a regulator, the combination with the diaphragm B of compound curve or double ogee shape'in cross section, andthe plunger E having enlarged head -E of the disks A and A having in their meeting faces concavities corresponding in shape and size to the shape and size of the concavo-conveX portion of the diaphragm, the margin of the diaphragm being secured between the margins of the disks and the disk A being provided With a depression corresponding in shape and size to the shape and size of the head E', substantially as set forth.
2. 1n a regulator, the combination of the casing `having the flange J provided With a number of pcrforations j, the post K, a pin passed through said post and one of said perforations, the lever F having a series of perforationsf, a pin passed through one of said perforations and through the post, forming the fulcrum of the lever, a plunger extending into the casing and engaging said lever, a diaphragm for moving said plunger, and a connection between the lever and the damper, substantially as set forth. l
