iimrnn STATES PATENT CHARLES L. ELLIS, OF SAN FRANCISCO, OALlFORNIA.
BUSINESS lNSTRUCTION AND PRACTICE BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 514,619, dated February 13, 1894.
Application filed June 17,1893.
To on whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES L. ELLIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful Business Instruction and Practice Book, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means for instructing in bookkeeping and other business operations, and it consists, essentially, in a book or tablet involving certain novel features of construction and arrangement which will be fullydescribed hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a book or tablet embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view, showing the book or tablet open.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawlngs.
l designates the back of the book or tablet, which is, preferably, of heavy cardboard or other stifi material, and 2, 2, represent opposite retaining strips or flanges, which are disposed parallel with the plane of the back and adjacent to the side edges thereof respectively. These retaining strips or flanges are preferably connected to the back by means of the flexible webs or sheaths 3. The flexible web or sheath at one edge of the book or tablet, which for convenience I shall term the rear edge, is extended to form a flap 4, to which is fixed one edge of the foldable cover 5. This cover is fixed to the inner or under surface of the flap 4, and its width is equal to the interval between the inner or facing edges of the retaining strips or flanges 2, whereby when the book or tablet is closed the cover lies between said strips with its upper surface flush with their upper surfaces.
The leaves 6 are arranged at their side edges between the upper surface of the back and the under surfaces of the retaining strips or flanges, and are securely fastened in such positions by means of the clips 7, which extend therethrough. These leaves are printed upon one side only and they are arranged with their printed surfaces down or toward the back, whereby when the book or tablet is Serial No. 477,971. (No modeLl opened only the blank rear surface of the first leaf is visible. The faces of the leaves are .printed or otherwise provided with forms, such as are employed in the various business transactions of the particular branch of work to which the instruction belongs, such forms being arranged in the book progressively, so that each successive leaf, when exposed, advances a step in the instruction.
The leaves are provided adjacent to their side edges and parallel with the inner or facing edges of the retaining strips or flanges with rows of perforations 8 and 9, and the various forms which are printed upon the leaves are separated from each other by intermediate tra'nsverse lines of perforations 10.
The leaves are designed to be detached at their outer edges by tearing the same upon the line of perforations 8, in order to enable the leaf to be folded upon the inner surface of the cover to expose its printed surface. The cover new forms awriting surface to enable the student to fill out the various blanks thereon, as indicated by the accompanying notes of instruction. After properly fillinga blank or form it should be detached from the book or tablet by tearing upon the line of perforations 9. After the various forms have been filled, and the instructions upon the exposed page have been followed with regard to the disposition of the various slips, the succeeding page may be detached at its outer edge, as above described. In this way only one page of the instruction book is exposed at a time, and the teacher is enabled to control the quantity of work of his pupil and prevent him from inquiring into and becoming confused by advanced steps before the rudiments of the subject have received the proper attention. After the removal of all of the leaves contained in the book or tablet a new set may be secured in the manner indicated in the foregoing description.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A book or tablet having a back 1, retaining strips'orfianges 2 arranged parallel with and overlapping the opposite side edges of the back, leaves fixed permanently at their edges between the back and the retaining strips and provided with lines of perforations adjacent to the inner edges of the strips, and
a cover loosely connected at one edge to one of the strips and adapted to fold between the inner edges of the strips to lie flush with the upper surfaces thereof when closed, substantially as specified.
2. A book or tablet having a back 1, side retaining strips 2, parallel with and overlapping the opposite side edges of the back, a cover 5 foldably connected atone edge to one of the said strips and adapted when closed to fit between the inner edges of the strips, and leaves printed upon one side only and fixed permanently at their side edges beneath the said retaining strips with their printed faces toward the back and perforated to enable I 5 them to be released at one edge and folded upon the inner surface of the open cover to expose their printed surfaces, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as 20 my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES L. ELLIS.
