SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 537,237, dated April 9, 1895.

Application filed October 1894- Y citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful vImprovements in Binders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the Yart to which it appertains tomake and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of this invention is to provide a cheap and effective binder for periodicals, magazines, papers, and the like, which will be cheap in construction,light and effective, and easily operated, and to secure other advantages hereinafter referred to.

The invention consists in the improved binder, and in the combination and arrangement of the parts thereof, as herein set forth and finally pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the accompanying drawings in which similar letters of reference indicate correspondingparts in each of the figures, where .they occur, Figure 1 represents an end elevation of a book binder, embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing one of the covers partly open, and illustrating the manner of fastening the stiff plate to the back of the binder, and of securing magazines thereto. Fig. 3 is Ya plan View of the stiff plate referred to. Fig. 4 is a modified form of the latter, in perspective, showing cleats for the fastening wires, and Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view through the back of the binder showing the means of fastening the parts together.

In said drawings, A, designates the covers; B, the back; C, the stiff plate; and D the magazines or periodicals.

In carrying out my invention, the cover, A, and back B, may be made of any suitable material, such as paper or cloth, the back, how ever, being stiff. The inside plate of back, C, which is also made of-st-iffniaterial, is detachably fastened to the back, B, of the cover at each end, by means or ordinary paper fasteners, a, or other fasteners; holes or eyelets, a', being formed in the back and the stiff plate, for the purpose. are also formed holes or eyelets, b, for securing the magazines in place, by means of suitable strings or cords, c, or wire, or other device, which are passed through Ythe central portion of the magazines on the inside and through said eyelets or recessesfand firmly tied at the back of the said stiff plate, as illustrated in Fig. 2. The eyelets, b', are to accommodate magazines of dilferent lengths, which are fastened to said plate, in the same manner as the larger ones.

As it is necessary to remove the back plate from the back every time a magazine is inserted it is desirable that the means of atwires c which are used instead of cords may be passed, after having been passed through the serrations d at the end of the plate to V,properly space the magazines, the ends of the wires being bent over the cleats after having been passed under them. In this construction the fastening eyelets JW-are located between the cleats and the ends ofthe plate.

It will be evident, at a glance, that the binder, as thus described, will be strong, ef-

fective, durable and cheap; that it will keep and preserve the books in a compact form, and that the method of securing magazines and periodicals therein, is easily to be understood, and the fasteners easily manipulated. The fasteningstring, cord, or wire, or other material, may be integralfand secure all the pamphlets in place, or each pamphlet may be secured by an independent cord or wire. As the cords are tied at the back 0f the plate C, they are not seen except a Small portion at the ends thereof, as will be evident.

Having thus described my invention, what `I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters IOD stiff back plate removably secured to the back, said plate being provided with means for removably seeurin g magazines thereto, the back and the plate each being provided with registering eyelets intermediate the .ends of the plate and the means of fastening the magazines, whereby the fasteners may be manipu-4 lated without interfering with the magazines, and removable fasteners through the registering eyelets of the plate and back, substantially as set forth.
