UNITED STATES PATENT QEEICE.
WINFORD R. S. HUNTER, OF BLACKBERRY, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN ATTACHING THILLS TO CARRIAGES, 80C.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 53,2S, dated April 10, 1866.
Y To all whom t 'may concern:
Be it known that I,W1NEoRD R. S. HUNTER, of Blackberry, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented a newr and useful Improvement in Attaching Thills to Garriages; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters and igures marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in scouring the thills to the carriage-axle by means of a spring in such a manner that the thills may he readily removed by simply relieving the saine from the pressure of said spring', and Without the trouble of removing bolts, nuts, or other fastenings, so that thills for a single horse and a pole for a span of horses may be used as desired. v
To enable those skilled in the art to understand how to construct and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with particularit'y, making reference in so doing to the aforesaid drawings, in Which- Figure l represents a plan or top view of my invention; Fig. 2, a side view of the same, and Fig 3 a vertical sectional view.
Similar letters of reference in the different figures denote the same parts of my invention.
A represents the thills, and B the front axle, of the carriage. As seen in Fig. 3, the iron upon the end of the thills, which are secured to the carriage, is provided with a slot, (marked ct,) which rests upon the bolt or pin E, which is supported, removably or otherwise, in the lugs or projections D upon the strap F, as shown.
'C represents a steel spring of suitable strength, which is secured to the axle by means of the strap F, Whose ends pass through one end of said spring, and are provided with the nuts or heads G G, said spring curving forward over the axle, as shown, and its end pressing down upon the slotted head to the shafts, holding the same securely upon the bolt E.
When the thills are raised up and the horse attached thereto, the groove or recess c in the slot a clasps around the pin E, and thus affords additional security against the thills becoming detached accidentally should the end of the spring slip from the shoulder b upon the thill.
The spring O may be attached and arranged in any suitable manner, provided it presses down upon the thill and holds itin place. By raising up the end of the spring the thills or pole may readily be removed or attached.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The employmentof a spring, C, in combination with the slotted thill head or iron, substantially as described, and for the purposes specified. y
2. Providing the slot a with the recess c, as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The combination ofthe spring C, the bolt or pin E, and thills A, provided with a slot, a, arranged as and for the purposes specified.
VINFORD R. S. HUNTER.
