CLASP FOR HAT-BANDS.

Be it known that We, MICHAEL GRENTHAL and ISAAC GRENTHAL, citizens of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of .New York, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mourning Hat-Bands, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in mourning bands for bats, and it has for its objects among others to provide a simple and cheap band and means for joining the ends thereof, whereby the band can be easily applied to the hat and held closely thcrearound. The fastening device comprises broadly strips for attachment to the ends of the band, the adjacent ends of said strips being oppositely bent and means being provided for connecting the same. These adjacent ends or edges may be connected in a variety of ways, some of which are herein shown. By our improvement the band can be easily and quickly aflixed to the hat and as easily and quickly removed when desired and this Without in any way injuring the hat.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claims.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a face View of our improved hat-band with a portion of the connecting means broken away. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the same. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, of a slightly-modified form, with a portion broken away. Fig. 4 is a section through Fig. 3. Fig. 5 represents, in side elevation, still another form of our invention. Fig. 6 is a sectional view of Fig. 5.

Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views.

Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the band which may be of any suitable material, and width, designed either for a mourning band or as an ordinary or ornamental band as may be desired.

In all of the forms shown each end of the band A is shown as provided with a strip B preferably of some thin metal having its opposite edges bent in opposite directions as shown in each of the various views. The ends of the band are held in the turned over portions or bends at one edge of the stripsas' shown, either by being clamped between the metal thereof as seen in Figs. 4 and 6 or by means of the prongs as seen in Fig. 1. The adjacent edges of these strips may be joined or united in various Ways. As seen in Fig. 1 they are connected by means of a sliding buckle or coupling 0 which consists of a piece of sheet metal bent at its opposite edges as seen at c and adapted to "be slid endwise over the bends b of the strips to hold the strips B and consequently the ends of the band together. The band is placed around the hat and the edges of the strips B brought as close together as possible and then the coupling 0 is slid over'the same as will be readily understood from Figs. land 2, drawing the strips B together and clamping the band to the hat.

In the forms shown'in Figs. 3 and 4 the adjacent edges of the strips B have their bent over portions 1) directly engaged with each other either by sliding the same endwise one upon the other, or by drawing the ends of the band together until the bends may be en'- gaged in a manner which will be readily understood.

In the form shown in Figs. 5 and 6.the adjacent edges of the strips B are joined by the cord or wire E which is laced in and out through the strips and concealed within the bends 19 thereof as shown in said views.

The strips B and their connecting means may be of any required design and as ornamental or fanciful in appearance as may be desired. The strips B and the means for connecting them may be covered with black cloth or any other desired material as indicated at b in Fig. 1.
