NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM \VOLLMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TQ GUSTAV A. HARTMANN, OF SAME PLACE.
BOOK-COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 539,372, dated May 14, 1 895.
Application filed March 16, 1895- To call whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM WOLLMAN, a subjectof the German Emperor, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Book-Covers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to certain im provements' in flexible covers for Bibles, prayer and other books, in which the rounded edge of the cover is produced in a simple and effective manner so that crimping or overlapping of the leather at the corners is avoided and a cover with smooth and durable corners obtained.
The invention consists of a flexible cover for Bibles and other books the main-body of which is provided with inwardly-bent sides, cut off at the corners, underlapping triangular pieces at the corners, and tapering recesses one at each side of said triangular pieces, the edges of the inwardly-bent sides abutting against each other, as will be fullydescribed hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents an inside View of a book-cover made according to myimproved method. Fig. 2 is a detail view of one of the corners of the blank from which the cover is made. Fig. 3 showsthe parts of the corners bent over the form preparatory to pasting them. Fig. 4 is a detail view of one of the corners of the cover,
shown completely finished; and Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse section on line 5 5, Fig. 4.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. Referring to the drawings, A represents a cover for Bibles, prayer and other books, which cover is made of leather or other suitable material having the required degree of flexibility. The blank A from which the coverA is made, is cut off at the corners at an angle of fortyfive degrees, as at d and provided with two inwardly-extending recesses-a at the corners, so that the portions between the recesses form triangular corner-pieces b, as shown in Fig.2. The edges of the triangular corner-pieces b b are straight, but the adjacent edges a of the sides at d are arc-shaped, the radius of the are being equal to the cut-off edge 02 of the side Serial No. 542,028. (No model.)
61, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The sides 01 of the body of the blank A are bent inwardly and are like the corner-pieces b skived or pared off so as to reduce the thickness of these parts at the points where the corner pieces underlap the sides. The blank A is shaped on a sheet-metal form having rounded-off corners, said blanks corresponding to the size of the corners to be produced.
In making the cover, the triangular cornerpieces b are first bent inwardly, as shown in Fig. 3, and then drawn over the rounded-off corners of the form. After the form is removed, the inwardly-bent corner-pieces b and sides (1 are pasted to the body A and worked down on the same so that the cover is formed with perfectly smooth and rounded off corners, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4. The straight edges of the inwardly-bent sides 01 d abut diagonally against each other, while their arcshaped edges a coincide with the rounded-off edges of the corner-pieces b, whereby a per fectly smooth and flexible corner is obtained. A lining e of thin smooth leather is then pasted over the inner edges of the sides and creased in a suitable manner so as to impart therequired finish to the same.
The rounded-01f corners of my improved flexible cover dispense with the unsightly crimping at the corners and with the overlapping ofthe corner-pieces over the inwardlybent sides so that a perfectly smooth and finished appearance is imparted to said corners. As the corners are cut and shaped on the form, it can be manufactured in a quick and cheap manner without'requiring speciallyfskilled hands, so that the work can be done at a considerable saving in time and labor.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patenty 1. A flexible cover for Bibles and other books, composed ofamain-body, having rounded-off corners formed of underlapping triangular corner-pieces, and inwardly-bent sides having diagonally-abutting edges, substantially as set forth.
2. A flexible cover for Bibles and other books, composed of amain-body having inwardly-bent sides with overlapping and-diagonally-abutting edges and rounded-0E cor- 2 :saasw ners, triangular cornenpieoes formed by inwardly-extending and tapering recesses, the adjacent edges of said recesses being straight and the outer edges arc-shaped, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as ence of two subscribing Witnesses.
WILLIAM WOLLMAN.
